Istiqlál (Independence), 19 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Friday, February 25, 2011 about 4:51 PM Pacific Time
I am looking forward to spring. I am looking forward to warm weather. I am looking forward to a nice soft spring breeze. The latest Severe Weather Bulletin released by the Weather Service concerns a Winter Storm Warning, a High Wind Warning, and a Wind Advisory, which all include Clark County Nevada.
I am tired of winter. I am tired of high winds. I am tired of looking out my living room window every morning to see if the one stone pine tree remaining in my yard is still standing. I did have one tree removed this February. I will be paying that off for the next two or three months. I cannot afford to have the final tree removed for at least another six to twelve months.
The T.V. Weather person predicts rain for this weekend. Rain is good because it washes my car. Rain is good because in this part of Nevada we are experiencing a drought. The disadvantage to the rain is that I have to drive in it. I have to take a prescription to the pharmacy and I have to pick up a box of food I ordered in late January. I hope it waits until I get back home tomorrow before it starts raining, but just incase it rains tonight I am going to roll my car windows up.

Thoughts on Spring-Cleaning
Fidál (Grace), 16 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Tuesday, February 22, 2011 about 9:27 PM Pacific Time
The first day a spring is in March, so my thoughts turn to my Grandma Newland and spring-cleaning. My grandmother always began spring-cleaning in the kitchen dining room combination of her house. She began by washing down all the counter space; once she completed that job then she would take the dishes out of the cupboards and put in new shelf paper. Grandma did not like her dishes touching the wooden shelves.
Grandma never waited until the first day of spring to do the spring-cleaning. She would start that job on either March 1 or February 28. Grandma always did a through spring-cleaning and the rest of the year kept the house spotless, which was not an easy task.
Grandpa and Grandma Newland lived in Blackwell, Oklahoma, in the Smelter Heights. There was a zinc smelter close to their home and the smoke from that settled on everything. Despite the fact that the location of their home did not lend itself to a spotless house, Grandma kept the house spotless. This was a testament to Grandma Newland’s persistence and stubbornness.
No matter which way the wind blew or how much dust came into the house, Grandma was determined to keep the house spotless and dust free. She accomplished this daunting task, while making cooking for Grandpa during the week and four grandchildren on the weekends.

Monday, February 21, 2011, Presidents’ Day
It is Presidents’ Day. It is a holiday, the banks are closed and there is no mail delivery. When I was a child, we celebrated Abraham Lincoln’s and George Washington’s birthdays separately and there were no three-day holidays.
When I was a child, it was a different world. I remember watching a black and white television set. I do not remember if the schools closed on either Lincoln’s or Washington’s Birthday. I remember learning that George Washington was the first president of the United States and that Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. We learned many other things about these two presidents.
Today I wonder if either of those two Presidents drank coffee. I am sure my teachers did not mention that fact in school. I have never read it the literature about them. It would be nice to know if they preferred to drink coffee or hot tea. It is little things like that which make history interesting and fun. We all learn about the big events, but the little facts bring an era in history to life.

Thoughts about a Three-day weekend
Jamál (Beauty), 14 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Sunday, February 20, 2011 about 5:39 PM Pacific Time
Monday is President’s Day and the third day of a three-day weekend. The day the President’s Day sales end. The only store I entered this weekend was Walgreen’s pharmacy to pick up a prescription for my mother. I do not think I am leaving the house tomorrow, but it is possible if I have to pick up another prescription.
I have plenty of work here at home to do. In addition, I have to write some copy. I write blog ads and post them in Poet 999’s Thoughts about Writing and Other Stuff. I did not make any blog post on either Wednesday, February 16, or Friday, February 18. Those were not good days. Any day I do not make a blog post of some type is not a good days.
I did not get any writing accomplished on those days. Usually I get a journal entry or a poem written, but I did not get any writing accomplished. I am tired and have been for several days. I am not sure why I am so tired, perhaps I am not sleeping well. This is not surprising because I have to listen for Mom, who wakes up crying in the middle of the night.

Mom wants Fried Chicken
Jalál (Glory), 13 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Saturday, February 19, 2011 about 1:00 PM Pacific Time
Mom wants fried chicken. Unfortunately, that is not on the menu for the rest of the week. It may be on next week’s menu if there are chick breasts or thighs in the Bountiful Blessings box I ordered from Angel Food Ministries at the beginning of February. I cannot remember everything that is included in this month’s box. Whenever I order the box, I read the contents, but after I order the box, I forget what type of meat it contains.
Perhaps I should worry about short-term memory lose, I don’t. I worry about paying the bills. I worry about affording prescriptions. I worry about how much the power the heat pump uses, but I don’t worry about food and I don’t worry about my own short-term memory. I also worry about whether I am spelling a word properly.
I think my biggest issue is stress, which may contribute to forgetfulness. I am under too much stress. I need to just chill out, sit down pray and meditate. A vacation would help, but that is out of the question at least until November, if ever.

I am still hanging in there
Istijlál (Majesty), 11 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Thursday, February 17, 2011 about 11:08 AM Pacific Time
As you can see, the cat is still hanging on to his limb. I am stilling hanging on myself. Yesterday evening the Weather Bureau announced a wind advisory for Clark County, since Las Vegas covers most of Clark County Nevada we had wind gust of 40 mph. and fortunately, the wind did not blow down the remaining stone pine in my front yard.
The tree still look as ill as ever, but at least it is still standing. I am not sure how long that will last, especially if we get any more high winds. I had the tree closest to the street and the power lines removed this month. I am going to be paying it off for the next several months, so
I cannot have the remaining tree removed this year.
Yesterday, when Mom and I returned I parked the car in the driveway. When the wind started blowing, I went out and moved the car closer to the house. I did not know if the tree would stand up to the wind and I did not want the car parked too close to it.

I’m Hangin’ in
Fidál (Grace), 9 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Tuesday, February 15, 2011 about 2:24 PM Pacific Time
This week I know how this cat feels, because I am feeling the same way. I am hanging in there and hoping that if the limb breaks or I let go the ground is soft. I think the biggest issue is the amount of work I have to do. For some reason I feel in a hurry to get everything accomplished.
I do not know why I feel pushed maybe it is because I work from home. I would love to get a job that would take me out of the house, but that is not possible at this time. I am my mother caregiver and I cannot afford to hire someone to take care of her. In addition, Mom has not responded well to winter, she does not do anything except sit on the couch or love seat covered with a blanket.
I keep the house as warm as possible, but it is not warm enough for Mom. This house has always been difficult to keep warm; unfortunately, Mom does not remember how difficult the house is to heat. Anyway, I am hanging in there and feeling like the cat in the picture.
Note about the picture: This picture came off a card someone sent me. I cannot find the card; I wish I could because I like the picture. This picture was on the outside of the card, but that is all I know about it.

Random Thought on Valentine’s Day
Kamál (Perfection), 8 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Monday, February 14, 2011 about 2:05 PM Pacific Time
Celebrating love
A Happy Valentine’s Day
A day for couples
All the ads I have seen for Valentine’s Day emphasized gifts. Some ads suggest roses, others chocolate and diamonds, etc. The one thing that comes across is that Valentine’s Day is for couples to celebrate their love. Since I am not part of a couple, I do not have anything to celebrate.
St. Valentine’s Day
Both Christian and pagan roots
Celebrating love
St. Valentine’s Day commemorates Saint Valentine a Third century A.D. Roman martyr executed on February 14 about 270 A.D. The pagan roots of Valentine’s Day come from a Roman fertility festival of Lupercalia celebrated on February 15.

After a cloudy morning in Las Vegas
Jamál (Beauty), 7 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Sunday, February 13, 2011 about 1:47 PM Pacific Time
The sun finally showed its face. The day finally warmed up a little bit. Looking out my window, I can envision spring’s arrival. This morning, grayish dirty white clouds covered large patches of the sky. The clouds made the day appear cooler and the blue sky that peeked through the clouds did not help brighten my mood.
This afternoon looks brighter. It still feels a bit chilly because of a slight wind, but that does not dampen my positive outlook. The wind this afternoon is gentle and sometimes nonexistent. About fifteen minutes ago, I looked out the window and the limbs of the tree across the street waved gently. However, when I took some trash to the garage the wind was not blowing at all.
Beautiful afternoon
Morning clouds have disappeared
Intermittent wind

Memories of Valentines Day
Istijlál (Majesty), 4 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Thursday, February 10, 2011 about 4:12 PM Pacific Time
I have fond memories of Valentines Day. When I went to Grade School in Blackwell, Oklahoma, we had Valentines Day parties on that day, if it fell during a weekday, but if it occurred on a Saturday or Sunday then we had a party on Friday.
The day before the party, the entire class made mailboxes out of shoeboxes. We cut out red and pink hearts to decorate the shoeboxes and then each student put his or her name on the box. The next day, each student brought Valentines cards and put them in the shoebox mailboxes.
One of the rule, this was made by the teachers and stated every year, was that everyone in the class received a card from all the other students. It did not matter to the teachers whether an individual student liked or associated with another student. You participated and you gave everyone in the class a Valentines card.
None of the students made their own Valentines cards or bought expensive cards for this occasion. Before the party, a student’s parents took the student to the store and they bought a little book containing cards you could cut out and give to the other students. I am not sure how much those little cards cost, but they were not over $2.00 and some of them were less then $1.00. I always enjoyed those Valentines parties.

Midweek Reflections and plant removal in Las Vegas
‘Idál (Justice), 3 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Wednesday, February 9, 2011 about 4:47 PM
It is Wednesday. It is hump day. The week is over the hill. On Tuesday, February 8, then Mom and I went to pick up some day old bread. I like getting this bread because it is free and this helps our food budget. Then on Tuesday afternoon, I had one of the trees removed from the front yard. I will be paying off the bill for the next couple of months, but the tree had to go. I am not down to two trees in the front yard.
I have a stone pine tree, which will also have to go, and an olive tree. I am not sure about the olive tree. It looks sick and it may have to go as well. The olive tree can wait because its roots does not cause issues with the cement in the drive way or the sewer pipes. Nor is the olive tree tall enough to take out power lines if the wind should blow it down.
I like most plants, as anyone who has read my blog knows I am not crazy about oleanders. Eventually the oleander in the yard must go, but getting rid of trees is much easier then getting rid of oleanders. Once you cut a tree down, you normally do not have to worry about its roots producing another tree. However, oleanders are different, if you do not remove all to the roots they grow back.

Another Wind Advisory
Kamál (Perfection), 1 Mulk (Dominion), 167 BE – Monday, February 7, 2011 about 4:56 PM Pacific Time
About 3:18 PM today, the Weather Service issued another Wind Advisory for Mohave Count Arizona and Clark County Nevada. According to the Glossary definition I found on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service site, a wind advisory refers to 25 to 39 mile per hour “sustained winds” or 57 mile per hour “wind gusts”.
Winds that fast make me nervous, especially since I have mature stone pine trees in my front yard. The trees do not look well and I am going to have to have them removed. A couple of years ago the wind took out the elm tree, which was much smaller then the pines. I am going to have to figure out how to get rid of the trees. They have to go before a big gust of wind takes one or both of them out.
I had planned to have the garage door fixed this month, but the trees have to come first. I will clean out my garage and drive the car in, I will not be about to close the door, but at least the car will be in the garage. Since the trees are leaning away from the garage, I doubt the wind will blow them down onto the garage.

Sunday Thoughts and Memories
Jamál (Beauty), 19 Sultán (Sovereignty), 167 BE – Sunday, February 6, 2011 about 3:11 PM Pacific Time
It is Sunday afternoon, February 6, 2011, tonight, at 7:00 PM, is the Feast of Mulk (Dominion). Mom and I are planning to attend, so I will probably begin getting ready about 5:00 or 5:30 PM. In the mean time, Mom is dozing on the love seat in the breakfast room. Since we will be out later then she is normally out, I am not going to let her sleep.
Today is also Super Bowl Sunday, not that I watch that game or any other football game. I would enjoy attending the game in person, but I do not normally enjoy watching sports on television. The only exception I make concerns the Summer and Winter Olympic games; those I will watch on television. I would also enjoy attending them in person.
Sunday always brings back fond memories. Grandma and Grandpa Newland always attended Sunday services at the First Southern Baptist Mission in Blackwell, Oklahoma. I enjoyed attending the Services with my Grandparents. I remember attending Sunday school and learning verses from the bible. I still remember the Lord’s Prayer and the Twenty-Third Psalms, which were two of the verses I memorized for Sunday school classes.
I miss my Grandparents, my mother’s parents. Mom misses them as well. She talks about them all the time and wonders where they are living. Mom has Alzheimer’s disease and she does not remember attending their funeral in Blackwell. I have told Mom that Grandma and Grandpa sold the house and move to a retirement village. She seemed satisfied with that explanation.

A Weary Day in Las Vegas
Jalál (Glory), 18 Sultán (Sovereignty), 167 BE – Friday, February 4, 2011 about 6:32 PM Pacific Time
Three stops and I am worn out. Today Mom and I went out to pick up a prescription I called in this morning. While we were out I picked up some day old bread (it was free) and went to the supermarket. After picking up the prescription and the food, we came home.
Those three errands completely wore me out. After arriving home, I carried the items into the house. There were several grocery bags full, but none of the stuff was heavy. I fixed use something to eat and then I sit down on the couch to rest. It took me about an hour to recover from those three errands.
The only long walk was in the grocery story. Either I need more exercise or I need to talk to my doctor about the experience. In the mean time, I think I will limit my errands to two different stores a day rather then three or more, especially if one of those stores is a supermarket. I do not have this problem when I go to one or two stores in a single day, so until I talk to my doctor I am simply going to be more careful.

Happy Groundhog Day and Happy Candlemas
‘Idál (Justice), 15 Sultán (Sovereignty), 167 BE – Wednesday, February 2, 2011 about 2:02 PM Pacific Time
Punxsutawney Phil came out of his burrow today and did not see his shadow, therefore he is predicting an early spring. Since we have not heard from Mojave Max, the Las Vegas desert tortoise who also enjoys predicting the arrival of spring, I am going to wait a little while before I turn the warm air off the cool air on.
I do not want to turn the cool air on too early because it is just as difficult and expensive to keep this house cool, as it is to keep it warm. I have not seen the next power bill, but I am dreading it. The cost of power is the main reason I have not had the pine trees in my front yard removed. It cost almost as much to heat the house as it does to have trees removed.
Fortunately, once I have the trees removed I will not have to pay for it again every month. I cannot say the same thing about the power bill. The power bill is a monthly occurrence, one that becomes more expensive as the season progresses. The two seasons I like best are spring and fall. I like them because those are the only seasons I can turn off the central air and still keep the house at a livable temperature.

Life was boring before I turned 60
Fidál (Grace), 14 Sultán (Sovereignty), 167 BE – Tuesday, February 1, 2011 about 5:12 PM Pacific Time
All right, maybe that title is an overstatement. I know that ever since I turned 60 my life has become stressful, on the verge of tears, hilarious at odd moments, but never uninteresting or boring. Sometimes it seems as if life is moving at hurricane speeds sweeping me toward a dense fog bank.
On December 24, 2011, I will be 65 years old. I will be old enough to go on Medicare if it still exists and I survive. I am no longer worried about the world ending in 2012, now the most important thing in my life if to have the stone pine trees removed from my front yard before the wind does the job for me.
Today is February 1, the weather service has issued a high wind watch and a wind advisory for Clark County Nevada. This morning, I woke up and immediately looked out my living room window to make sure the trees were still standing. I will do the same thing on the morning of February 2 and everyday thereafter until I get the trees removed.
Since I cannot afford to have the trees removed, I am writing about removing the trees. I am not sure what good blogging about tree removal will do, but it makes me feel better for a little while. As I implied at the beginning of this entry, life is becoming extremely interesting.
