I Am An Elder

Do not call me elderly:
I am an elder!

An Elder,
with sixty plus years of wisdom
acquired through surviving
in a materialistic society
that values youth and beauty
more than age and wisdom.

Do not dismiss me
or my ideas
with "OK Boomer!"
show a little respect
and listen to what I have to say;
even if you don't take my advice,
you may hear something interesting
about history and elder wisdom.

On a Spring Morning in 2020

The chill in the morning air
doesn't stop the birds from singing
or building nest.

I listened to them
as I waited for the paratransit bus
to take me to my obligatory blood draw.

Social distancing ignored
because I need my med refiled
and the doctor won't refill them
without the blood work report.

Faith's Candle

Oh, Lord,
thank you for lighting
the candle of my faith,
so that I may proclaim
God's Most Great Name
to every seeker
after truth.

Oh, Lord,
let my candle burn
casting the light of love
and faith
across the universe.

Getting Out of Your Rut

Has social distancing
put you in a rut.

You don't have to get out of the house
to get out of your rut,
all you have to do is get up
and chase the mouse
through the house.

What?
You don't have a mouse
in your house!

In that case I suggest
you do what my mother
and grandmother always did
when they were in a rut:
rearrange
the furniture.

Stay At Home

Stay at home
out of the crowds,
stay healthy
and don't bitch or groan.

Stay at home
until this health crisis passes,
and when it does
go to a movie,
out to eat,
or for a walk
around the block.

Stay at home
and work online,
or pick up the telephone
and call a friend.

I Walk By Faith

Each day
I walk by faith
step-by-step across
a narrow
stone covered path
that leads
through the valley of shadows.

I walk by faith
placing every test and difficulty
in the hands of God,
knowing my Lord is sufficient.

Dreaming of My Grandparents

A chill in the morning air
brings back memories of last night's dream
of my Grandparents
working together on a farm in Oklahoma.

I never saw the farm!
I remember once
Grandpa point out the land
where where the house and out buildings
once stood,
but in the dream
they were working together
and the buildings were standing
as the must have stood
when my Grandparents were first married.

Early Spring

In early spring
the temperature if fickle,
sometimes warm
and sometimes cold.

In early spring
the wind caresses
pollen baring trees
causing people to sneeze.

A Poem

A poem exists
somewhere in space and time
until the poet pens the rhyme.

A poem is born
when the poet's soul writes it
in the poet's mind.

A poem lives
when the reader intones it.

The Feast Day of Baha

On the Feast Day of Baha
the splendor of the New Year
rose resplendent above Sunrise Mount
casting the glory of dawn
across the planet.

In the first light of day
the excellence of spring
warmed the cold ground of winter
causing it to give birth
and bring forth
new life.

On the Eighth Day of Fast

I intone a prayer revealed for the Fast,
a prayer that begins praise of God,
a prayer the ask protection,
and request forgiveness.

I meditate,
I realize the prayer
encourages obedience
and trust in God--
the only protection in times of trouble.

Sleep arrives
on the wings of prayer
revealed for the Nineteen-day Fast,
and I realize that,
because of age and medication,
I miss fasting.

Paragraph by paragraph
I consumes the word of God
feeding my soul on sacred scriptures.

On the Second Day of Fast

I read a prayer
revealed for the nineteen-day Fast,
and contemplate letting go.

In its essence fasting
is letting go of the desires of the flesh--
such as food and drink--
and holding onto spiritual qualities--
such as faith in God
and forgiveness.

At 73
I am learning to let go
of the prejudices
and fears
that come between me
and the Glorious Lord.
