Looking Forward to a New Normal

I'm looking forward to a new normal,
to humanity united in its
fight against COVID-19
or any other pandemic.

I'm looking forward to a new normal,
when peace flows across the planet
like snow melt in spring.

I'm looking forward to a new normal,
with humanity united
as a single species.

Afternoon Poetry

Sometimes
it's a struggle
to think and write
on a warm Nevada afternoon.

When clouds
cover the sky,
birds huddle in their nests,
and the wind blows through palm trees
the poet contemplates the dim sunlight and writes.

Afternoon Serenade

Sparrows raise their voices
in joyful song,
serenading palm fronds
swaying in the wind,
on this beautiful spring afternoon.

Always Time for Prayer

Awake at midnight,
I don't have to turn on a light
I can just whisper a prayer
or access the prayer app
on my smartphone,
because there is always time for prayer.

At noon
I just face the point of adoration
recite the short obligatory prayer,
and go on about my day,
because there is always time for prayer.

A spiritual mood is easy to find,
when I inhale and exhale
the stress of the day
after which I can say
a prayer of gratitude
or protection,
because there is always time for prayer.

Always Time for Poetry

No matter the day,
the month,
or the year
there is always time for poetry.

Take a break,
pour yourself a cup of coffee,
take out a notebook,
or access your smartphone notepad
and write a poem.

It doesn't matter
if we're social distancing,
or stumbling over each others feet
there is always time for poetry.

Take a break,
fix yourself a glass of cold, sweet tea.
search the internet for your favorite poet,
and read your favorite poem--
because there is always time for poetry.

On an April Afternoon

On a sleepy April afternoon,
I listen to the songs of faith
proclaiming Baha'u'llah,
and extolling the joy  of Ridvan.

I hasten to thee, O my Lord,
raising prayers of gratitude
for the revelation of the Pen of Glory,
and His declaration
in the Garden of Ridvan.

On a warm April afternoon,
I give thanks for being born in this day,
and for being finding Baha'u'llah,
the Glory of God.

Poetry Speaks

Poetry speaks
to both mind and soul,
to both reader and poet.

Poetry speaks
in the language of emotions,
whispering to the passions
of both our souls and our minds;
of both the poet and the reader.

What does it say to your mind?
What does it say to your soul?

Celebrating Ridvan

Birds raise their voices in exaltation,
proclaiming the birth
of a new heaven and a new Earth.

Roses release the scent into the air,
inviting humanity to enter
the Garden of Paradise and celebrate
the Declaration of Baha'u'llah,
The Glory of God.

Accomplishment

After years of struggle,
of bringing myself to account.
of looking at my accomplishments,
of learning to forgive myself,
and of evaluating my failures,
I have come to like myself.

I can now appreciate
my casual fashion sense,
and my weird sense of humor.

Listen to His Call

Listen
to the call
of the Divine Beloved.

Reading the Word of God

Our souls,
like our bodies,
must be fed on a regular basis.

Reading
and meditating on the sacred scriptures
is one way we can feed our souls,
while prayer
is another way.

Reading and meditating,
at least twice a day,
helps our souls to thrive
and our faith to grow.

Chocolate and Coffee

Chocolate and coffee
are always necessary items,
but in times of stress
when sheltering in place
or under lock down
they are essential foods
for remaining sane.

Reading Plan for The Call of the Divine Beloved

I open
The Call of the Divine Beloved:
Selected ted Mystical Works of Baha'u'llah
.

I look at the table of contents,
I study the titles of each section,
and I wonder where to begin.

I know this book will be a slow read,
because I will read each section
several time.

I will read each section over and over.
I will meditate on each phrase,
each sentence,
each metaphor,
and each simile.

As I read each section over,
I will write poems
dedicated to Baha'u'llah,
the Divine Beloved.

A Poet's Prayer of Gratitude

O Thou All-Glorious Lord,
Thank You
for my intuition,
which helps me
to write odes to Your Glory.

O Beloved of my soul,
Thank You
for helping me
to create rhythms and rhymes,
stanzas and lines,
and metaphors and similes.
which compliment
a poem's subject and theme.

Easter Sunday in Lock Down

A cool breeze blows
caressing greening limbs
on Easter Sunday 2020.

Does the breeze carry
the COVID -19 virus?

Maybe
and maybe not,
but just to be  safe
we spend the day in lock down.

On a Beautiful Spring Day

A gentle breeze caresses the palm trees.
somewhere a dog barks,
and the bright sun cast
dark shadows across
the sidewalk.

The afternoon advances
as Las Vegas
shelters in place
waiting for the pandemic
to pass.

Fickle April

Fickle April can't decide
whether it is spring or winter.

A chilled wind blows through
palm and pine,
dark clouds hide the sun,
and a cold rain falls.

A spring breeze
blows through the trees,
birds sing to attract a mate,
and the sun shines happy and bright.

Fickle April
can't make up its mind
so one day is cold
and the next day warm.

Shelter in Place: A Test of Faith

This will pass
and when it does
humanity will be more united.

This is a test
of our resolve
to spread the Word of God
across the planet.

Stand firm
in the love of God
and humanity.

This will pass
and our faith will be stronger
for the test.

Writing Poetry is a Spiritual Experience

For me
writing poetry
is a spiritual experience.

I pray,
intoning the prayers
revealed by Baha'u'llah,
the Bab,
or 'Abdu'l-Baha.

I think,
I meditate,
I contemplate,
and I let min intuition find
the title,
or the first line,
or the rhyme.

I write
allowing my soul's insight
to discover
the rhythm,
the metaphors,
and the similes.

A Beautiful April Afternoon

It's a beautiful afternoon
in early April,
the sun is shining,
the wind is blowing,
and somewhere a dog is barking.

The pace of life has slowed
because most of the world
is practicing
social distancing.

When will life
get back to normal,
or will we experience
a "new normal"
when this pandemic ends.

Happy NaPoWriMo

Happy National Poetry Writing Month 2020!

it will make it easier
to handle.

Reading a poem a day
will not make social distancing go away.
it will keep you sane
and help you overcome
cabin fever.

Write a poem
and call your friends
read it over the phone
to them.
