Motivational Monday: Today's Motivation

Kamal (Perfection), 3 Núr (Light), 173 BE - Monday, June 6, 2016 about 5:47 PM Pacific Daylight Time

What motivated me today? This morning my writing motivation was a question about the difference between prose poetry and a short-short story. I did a little research to find out the difference. I found that prose poetry focuses on metaphor, simile, and imagery with passages of rhythm, rhyme, and meter. While a short-short story focuses of character and plot. All right I already knew  that, but there is nothing wrong in doing a little research to find out that what you already knew was right.

I was also motivated to pick up my Senior Commodity allotment today and go  to one of the food banks to get some other items. My SNAP allotment was cut down the last time I applied, so I will have to go to other food banks for some more food later this month. Next month I have to recertify for the Senior Commodities, so I am motivated to make out the paperwork for that.

The only other interesting thing I did today was to apply for a burial plan. I am 69 years old and, even though I am in fair health, my eventual death and burial is something I need to consider. I have a burial lot paid for, but, as I found out when we buried my mother in 2012, there are other costs besides the lot and the casket. The burial plan will cost about $50.00 a month which means I am now motivated to figure out where that $50.00 will come from. You see, I am living on a fixed income so that money cuts into something else. However, I have to consider the extra cost of burying my body when my soul passes into the next world.

Spiritual Sunday: A Day of Food, Fun, and Fellowship

Jamal (Beauty), 4 Ayyám-i-Há (The Days of Há), 171 BE - Sunday, March 1, 2015 about 4:03 pm Pacific Standard Time

I spend the morning out talking with friends and eating. I enjoyed the relaxation and the fellowship. We laughed. We ate. We caught up on our life events. I came home, spent some time online, and then I went out with another friend. We laughed. We got food to bring home. I am tired. I have enough food to last me a two or three days. This is good because I am going to attempt to stop snacking.

My goal for the next nineteen days is to cut down on the snacks. This means that instead of spreading my meals over the day I have to sit down, consume the main course, and then have my desert then. I cannot eat between meals. This will be a bit difficult because I am used to snacking whenever I feel that I am hunger. I can have water or coffee between meals, but any other liquids such as juice, hot tea, or soda I have to have with my meal.

I should be able to give up the snacks for nineteen days without any difficulty, but I could be wrong. As I wrote, I am used to snacking. I usually do most of my between meal eating when I am at the computer. When I feel like I want a snack I will have to either ignore the feel or find something to distract me. I know that one thing I can do iw get up from the computer and do housework. I can also take a walk outside or pick up my prayer book and read a prayer.

I found the answer to Friday's problem

Jalál (Glory), 9 ‘Aẓamat (Grandeur), 170 BE - Saturday, May 25, 2013 about 9:17 AM Pacific Daylight Time

This morning I figured out what caused my stomach pain yesterday. The problem was caused by drinking coffee without eating anything all morning. I have a bad habit of not eating breakfast before 10:00 or 11:00 AM, which means that often I go out without any food in my stomach. I drink coffee, but I do not eat. On Friday, that is what caused the pain in my stomach.

I figured that out this morning because I drink a cup of coffee without eating anything. The pain in my stomach started again. After the pain started, I fixed myself a couple of eggs with buttered toast. Once I ate the pain went away. When I was younger things like this did not bother me, but now that I am over 60 it gives me problems.

This afternoon I will mix some powdered milk so that I can have cereal with my morning coffee. That should take care of part of the problem with my stomach. The only thing I have to figure out now concerns the specific food or foods that I eat which causes me issues. I suspect the culprit is foods that hove cooked tomatoes in them. Unfortunately, there is not very much I can do about that because I receive canned tomatoes and pasta sauce with my senior food allotment.

I can limit myself to one can of pasta sauce or diced tomatoes a week, but I cannot eliminate them all together. I can also add other ingredients to the pasta dishes to help dilute the pasta sauce. The last thing I can do is make sure I take the prescription for my stomach problems everyday. Taking all those steps will allow me to eat the foods I like without dealing with the pain that those foods cause. If the pain gets worse or occurs more then once every two or three months then I will have to talk to my doctor about other solutions or other problems.

Friday afternoon in Las Vegas

Istiqlál (Independence), 8 ‘Aẓamat (Grandeur), 170 BE - Friday, May 24, 2013 about 7:29 PM Pacific Time

I can't say this was a normal Friday afternoon because I spent most of it asleep on the couch. This morning I picked up a loaf of free day old bread and my senior food allotment and then came home. When I arrived back at the house, I put the milk and the cheese in the refrigerator, warmed up a cup of leftover coffee in the microwave, and then sit down at the computer to do some blog entries and other writing.

I opened two little packages of cookies to go with my coffee. I managed to complete the a blog entry in my writing.com blog before my stomach began hurting. My stomach does this every so often and the only thing I can do for it is say the Long Healing Prayer and lay down for a nap. I don't know why my stomach began hurting today because I have taken the medication everyday for  the past week. The problem is either something I eat or didn't eat.

I feel better now, but I doubt I can sleep tonight. Therefore, I will either do some housework or write. I could wash and dry a load of clothes while I'm writing. I could also pack up some of Mom's clothes to give away. The place I pick up free bread also gives away food and clothes, so I could take Mom's clothes to that place.

I have to pick up another loaf of bread next week sometimes, so I'll take a couple of bags of clothes when I go to pick up the bread. I have several other things to do next week as well and at least two of them are in the same direction as the place I pick up the free bread.

I do not like cooking for just myself

Istijlál (Majesty), 2 Kamál (Perfection), 169 BE – Thursday, August 2, 2012 about 6:30 PM Pacific Time

I don’t like cooking just for myself and that is what I do five days a week. Mom goes to the daycare center Monday through Friday and she gets two or three meals a day there, when she comes home in the evening there is someone else to fix a small meal for her. Mom has evening meds to take and so she has to eat something.

I cook for myself five days a week. The problem is that I don’t fix a balanced meal just for me. I have tried frozen dinners and they don’t satisfy me; perhaps I need to try larger frozen meals instead of the one I am buying. I get hungry in the evening. I think I will fix myself a salad and eat that this evening. Perhaps that will satisfy me. A salad is easy to fix and I don’t have to warm it up in the microwave.

On weekends, when Mom is home I fix a balanced meal because Mom needs to eat. I eat balanced meals on the weekends and that seems to satisfy me, I have to start fixing myself balanced meals during the week.

Spaghetti with meat sauce

‘Idál (Justice), 13 Kalimát (Words), 169 BE – Wednesday, July 25, 2012 about 5:25 PM Pacific Time

I fixed a batch of spaghetti with meat sauce today. It was spaghetti sauce from a can, but it tasted all right for a quick meal. I did not feel like making the meat sauce from scratch even if I had all the ingredients. Normally, I prefer my spaghetti sauce either homemade or from a jar.

The jars of spaghetti sauce taste better then the sauce from a can; however, I did not have any jars of spaghetti sauce in the pantry. The cans of spaghetti sauce gifts, so I used those today. I fixed enough spaghetti to last us until Saturday or Sunday (I hope), so I had to use two cans of the sauce to flavor the amount of spaghetti I cooked.

I am looking forward to having spaghetti for lunch tomorrow with a salad and maybe some iced tea or iced coffee. Fortunately, with the spaghetti all I have to do is warm it over in the microwave and add a little grated cheese. I have a grater and I can grate the cheese manually. Once the cheese and spaghetti are heated, it will taste good. I do not need very much to eat for lunch on Thursday, just something to keep me from getting hungry. Maybe I will fix me the same meal for Friday.

My Mother’s Gelatin Fruit Salad

Fidál (Grace), 9 Kamál (Perfection), 167 BE – Tuesday, August 9, 2011 about 9:55 AM Pacific Time

I made Mom’s gelatin fruit salad last night. I had two 15 oz. cans of mixed fruit in the cupboard, so I need only the gelatin to make the salad. When I went to Smith’s Food and Drug store last week, I bought four 0.3 oz. packages of flavored gelatin, two raspberry flavored and two cherry flavored.

Last night, I boiled some water and mixed the raspberry gelatin. I used two cups of boiling water, one cup per package and dissolved the gelatin. After dissolving the gelatin, I mixed one cup of juice from the mixed fruit and one cup of cold water. I then added the 15 oz. of mixed fruit and put the dish in the refrigerator. When Mom returns home this afternoon, I will fix her a dish for her supper.

Convincing my mother to eat

‘Idál (Justice), 8 Kalimát (Words), 167 BE – Wednesday, July 20, 2011 about 5:30 PM Pacific Time

I finally figured out how to get my mother to eat. The discovery was an accident. I had some fresh frozen peas, green beans, carrots, and corn, in the freezer. I made soup with the vegetables and a shrimp bullion cub, Mom loved it. She ate everything in the soup bowl and asked for seconds. We finished that soup on Monday.

On Tuesday, I mixed some canned green beans, carrots, and peas with a can of chicken. Tomorrow, I have to fix something else, but I have not decided what. I still have some frozen corn and green beans in the freezer, perhaps I can mix a can of peas and carrots with those. I still have a couple of cans of chicken I could mix with that.

On July 30, I will pick up a fruit and vegetable box I ordered earlier this month. It contains ears of corn, squash, cabbage and carrots; I can fix a salad and fried squash or fix a zucchini salad; Mom would like that. In the mean time, Mom will have to be satisfied with canned fruit and vegetables. In addition, to a box of instant potatoes, have some pork chops and a couple of small steaks in the freezer; perhaps we will have those with some potatoes and gravy on Saturday. Mom likes mashed potatoes and gravy.

Encouraging my Mother to eat

Istijlál (Majesty), 2 Kalimát (Words), 167 BE – Thursday, July 14, 2011 about 5:55 PM Pacific Time

I finally figured out the secret of getting my mother to eat. It is a simple process of fixing a meal with different tastes. I noticed a few days ago when I fixed some leftovers. I mixed different vegetables with two different types of meat. When I give it to Mom, she ate everything on her plate or rather in her bowl.

Mom likes to eat her food out of a cereal or soup bowl. It does not matter what she is eating, she wants it in a bowl rather then a plate. As long as she eats, I do not care what type of plate or bowl wants her food in. I am happy to find out she eats better if the food has different tastes and textures.

Today, I fixed vegetable soup. I mixed four different types of frozen vegetables together and let them cook in the slow cooker. To the vegetables, I added a shrimp bouillon cube. Mom enjoyed the veggie and she ate everything in her bowl. Tomorrow I will warm some of the soup up in the microwave and maybe add some canned chicken or fish. I think I have a can of salmon in the pantry.

Spaghetti and Spicy Mustard

‘Idál (Justice), 5 ‘Ilm (Knowledge), 167 BE – Wednesday, October 19-20, 2010 about 12:53 Pacific Time

Life is like spaghetti and spicy mustard. All right, that does not seem to make much sense. I emptied a bottle of spicy must a few days ago, but there was still some mustard left. Instead of throwing the mustard away I put it in a pot of spaghetti.

I did this for two reasons. First, I needed something to use with the mustard. Second, the flavor sounded intriguing. I am a good cook. I am a creative cook. I do not like to waste anything; therefore, I put the mustard in the spaghetti while it was cooking.

I poured vegetable oil, in addition to some water, into the mustard bottle to rinse out the remaining mustard. Then I emptied the bottle of mustard into the spaghetti. The aroma of the spicy mustard and the spaghetti was tantalizing. After that, I opened a can of spaghetti sauce and put it in the pan.

I prefer to make spaghetti sauce from scratch, but we received the sauce when we picked up our commodities and I needed to use the sauce. The canned spaghetti sauce tastes good; true not like the homemade sauce, but it will do in a pinch. I am cooking for only my mother and myself so the canned sauce works well because it is quick and saves some time when I make lunch or dinner.

A Happy Fourth of July

Kamál (Perfection), 12 Rahmat (Mercy), 167 BE – Monday, July 5, 2010 about 10:41 AM Pacific Time

Mom and I had a happy Fourth of July!

We stayed home all day on the Fourth. We ate hot dogs on buns with yellow mustard and sweet relish. On Sunday evening, I cut a small seedless watermelon in half for us to eat. Mom enjoyed the watermelon, so I am going to buy another one for us.

I still have to get some foods that Mom can fix for herself. All though, I should say will fix for herself because there is a difference. We have plenty of food in the house, it is just that Mom will not fix anything other then peanut butter sandwiches or cold cereal.

Mom liked the hot dogs we had yesterday. She put mustard on one bun and peanut butter on another. Mom seemed to like the hot dog and peanut butter on a bun. Mom needs to gain weight, so as long as she eats the food I do not care how she combines it. I know some of the food she combines sounds a bit odd, but Mom is the one eating the combinations.

I heated the hot dogs in the fry pan yesterday. I also placed the buns on the plates, but Mom fixed the rest for herself. If I cook something, Mom does the rest for herself; she just will not cook or open a can. I am not sure why she does not want to cook anymore. I suspect some of Mom's actions have to do with Alzheimer' disease.

Getting my mother to eat

Istijlál (Majesty), 18 ‘Azamat (Grandeur), 166 BE – Thursday, June 3, 2010 about 7:53 AM Pacific Time

Getting Mom to eat is becoming difficult, she eats a little bit at a time and then doesn't want to eat any more. The doctor gave her a medication that increases her appetite, which improves the situation a little. Mom eats better when we go to a restaurant then when we're at home. The only exception is fast food that I buy and bring home Mom eats that fairly well.

Mom's doctor wants here to gain weight, but she can't gain weight if she doesn't eat. The last time the doctor weighed her, the scale read 99 lbs. The doctor wants her weight to be about 115 or 120 lbs. I will be happy is she gets to 110 lbs.

I ask Mom what she wants to eat and she says, "I don't care. Whatever you fix is fine with me." The idea solution, is to take her to a restaurant for one or two meal a week. I know she would gain weight, but the problem with that is money. We just can't afford to go out to eat more then once or twice a month. The only thing I can do at this point is encourage her to eat and make sure she takes her medication.

I'm extra hungry this morning

Kamál (Perfection), 17 Mulk (Dominion), 166 BE – Monday, February 23, 2009 about 7:24 AM Pacific Time

I don't know why, but I'm extra hungry this morning. I got up before dawn today, which is an achievement and rare for the past week or so. I took my thyroid pill and an hour later the other pill I take. When Mom got up I ate a bit, but that didn't satisfy me. In fact, nothing I've eaten this morning satisfies me and I'm not sure of the reason.

I have a couple of boxes of Hamburger Helper in the cupboard and about two pound of hamburger in the fridge. When I went to Food 4 Less yesterday to pick up my meds, I checked the meet counter and found a manager's special on hamburger. The price was too good to pass up so I bought enough ground beef to fix with two boxes of Helper in the cupboard. Perhaps it's the thought of having the hamburger today that's making me hungry.

I was going to wait until lunch to fix the hamburger, but I think I will do it this morning. I'll cook the hamburger and then add the Hamburger Helper. I may also add a can of green beans to it or something else. I normally add more to the meal then what the directions call for on the package. I am a creative cook and I enjoy seeing what other ingredients go with food I cook.

I Like Red Onions

Jalál (Glory), 14 Kalimat (Words), 165 BE – Saturday, July 26, 2008 about 1:21 PM PDT

I like red onions. I like them sliced very thin on a hamburger with dill pickles and salad dressing. I like them chopped on a hotdog with sweet relish and mustard. I like them chopped and put in a dinner salad. I like them chopped and cooked with fried potatoes.

My grandmother fried potatoes with red onions in them. When she made hamburger for my siblings and myself, she sliced red onions for our hamburgers. Grandma chopped red onions for hotdogs and salads. I know where I picked up my taste for red onions with my food. What I want to know, is where did I pickup the taste for raw red onions without any other food to go with them.

I love eating a slice of raw red onions by themselves no salad dressing, no hamburger, no hot dog, no salad, just a plain slice of raw red onion. Naturally, this is not something I eat everyday. I usually eat a slice of raw onion on Saturday or Sunday, when I know I am not going to leave the house. After I eat a slice red onion I brush my teeth several times.

Not only would I like to know where I picked up the taste for red onions this way, but I would like to know if it is a common taste. I have never heard anyone talk about this particular taste before. I have had conversations with other people about different foods, but the subject of eating slices of raw red onions by them has never come up.
