On a Beautiful Spring Day

A gentle breeze caresses the palm trees.
somewhere a dog barks,
and the bright sun cast
dark shadows across
the sidewalk.

The afternoon advances
as Las Vegas
shelters in place
waiting for the pandemic
to pass.

Winter Memory : The Wind

t began
by whispering
through the olive tree,
it shouted through the stone pine limbs,
the windchill froze
the marrow in my bones,
and sent ice spiders
crawling
up my spine.

Goose bumps rose on my bare arms,
and not even
a sweater could warm me;
I remembered winter
in Oklahoma.

Autumn Wind

A cold wind blow
sending chills up the spine of autumn,
and suggesting that winter is here,
but winter solstice
is still 26 days away.

Thanksgiving
is 2 days away:
Will it snow on Thanksgiving?

Autumn

Short days
and long nights,
winter approaches on
the chilly autumn wind
and summer becomes a memory.

Saturday Afternoon

Partly cloudy
patches of blue sky
peek through grayish-white clouds
that are pushed by the wind
toward the western mountains.

Windy Wednesday

It's a windy Wednesday
here in Las Vegas,
with palm fronds waving
and clouds dancing across the sky.

Evening Breeze in March

March wind whispers
sweet nothings
to palm fronds
and olive leaves.

March blows
into the arm of April
composes love odes
to April showers.

Wind Shadows

The wind blows,
and shadows dance
across stone walls.

The wind blows,
and shadows of cold flames flicker.

Spring Memories

It was a new day
The wind whispered through oak leaves
Birds flew to their nests

Sweet Nothings

Combing
the palm trees straggly hair
the wind whispers sweet nothing in their ears.

A Glacial Wind

Istiqlál (Independence), 8 Sharaf (Honor), 173 BE - Friday, January 6, 2017 AD about 3:01 PM Pacific Standard Time

It is a sunny and clear 44 degrees here in Las Vegas. The wind, which is about 5 mph, feels as if it is blowing off a glacier. I went out to get the mail and my feet felt as if they were freezing. Alright, I shouldn't wear flip-flops in the winter time. Since I don't have any other shoes that fit, I need to start wearing socks so that my toes don't get cold.

A glacial wind blows
Whispering snow stories
Oklahoma memories

I don't miss Oklahoma in the winter time. I like living in Las Vegas because if I want to play in the snow, I can drive up to Mount Charleston, which I'm not going to do until I can get new tires for my car. Come to think of it, even if I had new tires, I wouldn't drive up to The Mountain this time of year. If someone else offered to take me up their, in their car, I would go, but I'm not going to drive myself or let anyone drive my car up their.

Autumnal Equinox 2016

Istijlál (Majesty), 16 ‘Izzat (Might), 173 BE - Thursday, September 22, 2016 AD about 12:16 Pacific Daylight Time

In Las Vegas the wind is blowing
Carrying litter
Up and down the city's streets and avenues
And depositing it into drainage inlets
Blocking them and  preventing rainwater
From draining into the flood control systems
Potentially causing flooded roadways.

I know this is a problem in every large city and small town across the nation. People throw their trash out car windows without thinking of the consequences of their actions. Maybe they think that the city's street sweeping equipment will pick up the litter before the next rain, but that isn't always true. The street sweeping machine usually passes through a neighborhood once a week, but it could rain before the machine passes or the litter could be too large for the machine to handle. If the litter is too large for the city equipment then other removal means are necessary. Sometimes a city can't pay for the other means or it rains before the scheduled time.

I don't know if this entry will cause people to think about the consequences of throwing trash out the window of their cars. I suspect the people who do that won't think this entry applies to them (if they read the entry).

Sunday Morning in Las Vegas

Jamal (Beauty), 2 Masá’il (Questions), 172 BE - Sunday, December 13, 2015 about 5:54 AM Pacific Standard Time

It's a cold Sunday morning in Las Vegas. The temperature if 40 degrees with a wind chill of 40 and snow on Mount Charleston. I put on a sweater this morning because it felt cold. When I woke up about 4:00 AM it was 39 degrees with a wind chill of 35. We are experiencing a severe weather alert which consist of a wind advisory. I haven't looked outside to see if the wind is blowing. I know it was blowing last night when I went to bed. However, it wasn't blowing when I got up this morning. Even if I don't look outside, I always know when the wind is blowing because I can hear it pushing litter down the street or causing some other weird noise.

I sip hot coffee and write

Midweek Reflections on Chirping birds, wind, and writing

Idal (Justice), 7 Jalál (Glory), 172 BE - Wednesday, April 15, 2015 about 2:37 pm Pacific Daylight Time

A baby bird chirps
As wind blows the pine tree limbs
Rock-a-by baby

Last night the wind raged through Las Vegas. In some sections of town it knocked down trees and power lines. It did not do much damage on Sunrise Avenue. At least it did not do any noticeable damage. It did not knock the bird's nest out of the pine tree across the street. It did knock some dead palm fronds off the local palm trees, but I do not see many laying in the street so someone must have moved any that may cause difficulty for traffic.

Last night's horrid sound
Gave a momentary fright
While I sit and typed

I will continue to write and type as long as I have electricity and an internet connection. There is no use getting frightened when I can come up with a plausible reason especially when I have no intention of going out in the middle of the night to investigate. Since the electricity did not go off, the internet did no go down, and the roof did not fall in I continued working. I do not panic unless I have something to panic about.

I need batteries
Without electricity
My only illumination is my cellphone

Tuesday's Topic: March Wind

Fiḍal (Grace), 11 Bahá (Splendour), 172 BE - Tuesday, March 31, 2015 about 12:50 pm Pacific Daylight Time

The wind is blowing today. According to the weather report the wind speed is expected to be between 25 to 30 mph with temperatures in the high 80s or low 90s. Right now the temperature is around 87 degrees with a partly cloudy sky.

March wind dancing
across Las Vegas valley
temperatures rising

I turned the cool air on yesterday afternoon and again just a few minutes ago. I only use the air when I have to because of the power bills. I have placed the situation in God's hands so now I can focus on increasing my income and finding a another place to live. I do not know if it will be cheaper or not; however, it will be senior housing so I should be able to get some type of break on the rent.

March wind is dancing
at twenty-five miles per hour
along Sunrise Avenue

I thought that when March came in roaring it was supposed to go out bleating, but this year it came in roaring and its going out roaring. On the bright side the temperatures are supposed to descend into the low 80s or high 70s for the next five or six day. This will be nice especially on Thursday when I have an appointment with my optometrist. I have to remember to tell him that my mother had age related macular degeneration, I do not remember if I told him about that or not.

The Last Sunday in March 2014

Kamál (Perfection), 11 Bahá (Splendor), 171 BE - Sunday, March 30, 2014 about 7:41 pm Pacific Daylight Time

It is after sunset on the last Sunday in March. This morning the wind blew so hard that it sent litter blowing down the street and making all sorts of weird noises. The wind woke me up, so I suppose it means that March is going out like a lion.

the lion of March
howls through the streets knocks on doors
rude awakening

According to weather.com, the wind was 10 mph. I think it sounded like it was blowing faster then that, but I did not go outside until about 11:00 am and the wind had calmed down a little. According to tomorrow's forecast the wind is supposed to reach 26 mph which should make carrying trash to the alley interesting.

October Wind in Las Vegas

Kamál (Perfection), 13 ‘Ilm (Knowledge), 170 BE - Monday, October 28, 2013 about 6:22 AM Pacific Daylight Time

the wind was scary
things going bump all night
chilling the darkness

I am not sure what time the wind started blowing last night. I know I heard it when I went to sleep on the couch, which was between 6:30 and 10:00 pm. It blew hard enough to rattle the mail slot in the front door and it sounds like someone is attempting to break into the house. I have lived here long enough that I am used to the sound, but when I first moved into this house it frightened me until I figured out what made the noise.

the wind is scary
pushing trashcans down the street
waking me from sleep

I woke up, before the alarm sound this morning, to the noise of plastic trashcans blowing in the street. At least, I think it was sound of plastic trashcans blowing in the wind. It was still dark outside, so I did not open the door or go outside to find out what made the noise. I choose to remain in the house because 3:30 am is too early to go out looking for the cause of noises.

Tuesday Afternoon in Las Vegas

Fiḍál (Grace), 6 Kamál (Perfection), 170 BE - Tuesday, August 6, 2013 about 12:57 PM Pacific Time

The postman just delivered the mail and I am about out of iced coffee. I should get up from this computer and pick up the letters or more likely junk mail he just stuck through the mail slot in the front door. I am not looking forward to seeing what the postman brought today, but it could be something important.

Tuesday afternoon
wind blowing and sky hazy
sun cast dark shadows

I need another cup of iced coffee or maybe a cold soda. The problem is that I do not want to get up. The only thing I want to do is write. I keep looking out the window to see if I can get an idea for another haiku or perhaps a story. The only things I see outside are cars driving by or the wind blowing through a neighbor's olive tree.

blow dryer effect
triple digit temperatures
a hazy blue sky

This afternoon, the wind is variable. I can tell which way the wind is blowing by looking at the American flag flying in front of my neighbor's house. I do not think the wind is blowing more then two or three miles an hour; however, I have not listened to the news or checked the weather online, so the wind could be blowing faster or slower.

The wind is still blowing in Las Vegas

Kamál (Perfection), 4 ‘Aẓamat (Grandeur), 170 BE - Monday, May 20, 2013 about 1:58 PM Pacific Time

The wind is still blowing in Las Vegas. It seems as if we have had more windy day  this month then normal; however, that may just me my opinion. I look out the living room window and watch the limbs of the olive tree across the street wave. The tree seems to be waving good-by to spring because we have begun encountering triple digit days.

triple digit days
cast warm shadows over May
the wind is blowing

I don't like getting out of the house on triple digit days, but often I have no other choice. I just checked the temperature for Las Vegas on weather.com. According to weather.com the temperature right now is 81 degrees, but it feels like 79 degrees; I guess that is because the wind is blowing. The high today is supposed to be 84 degrees. I like those temperatures better then the triple digit temperatures we've experienced for the past few days.

I like getting out of the house better in 80 degree temperatures rather then 100 degree temperatures. I think that's because the air in my car doesn't work properly. I usually plan my trips to the store and every place else in the morning or the evening. Sometime I have to get out during the hottest part of the day, but I don't like doing that.

Insomnia on April Fools Day

Kamál (Perfection), 12 Bahá (Splendor), 170 BE - Monday, April 1, 2013 about 1:05 AM Pacific Daylight Time

It is after midnight on Monday, April 1, 2013 and I cannot sleep. I have insomnia on April Fools Day. For the past two or three hours I have attempted to sleep without any luck. Since I cannot sleep, I may as well bet sitting at the computer, at least here I can accomplish something even if it is only a blog entry.

For two hours I have listened to the wind blow. I heard something rattling on the cement outside my house, so I got up and looked out the door. The wind was blowing an aluminum can across my driveway. I think it was a can, but it could have been some other piece of trash. I did not go outside to see what it was, all I saw was something white blowing across my driveway.

After I decided the aluminum can noise was not something dangerous, I went back to bed and attempted to go to sleep. No luck. I am awake. I cannot go back to sleep. Therefore, I have to do something else to fill the time. I could do dishes. I could do laundry. I could read. I could sit on the couch and watch television. Since I have a writing deadline approaching, I will post this blog entry and then work on the poem I need to finish by April 3.
