Friday Evening Thoughts

It's Friday, January 2, 2015 and I'm a bit tired. I was yawning a few minutes ago, but now I'm wide awake. I'm awake and I'm tired. I think it's because this is Friday and I have a lot to do this weekend. Tomorrow I'm going to eat leftover soup because I made a large batch on Thursday, January 1. I want to eat that up before I purchase canned soup at the store.

The wind is still blowing in Las Vegas

The wind is still blowing in Las Vegas. It seems as if we have had more windy day  this month then normal; however, that may just me my opinion. I look out the living room window and watch the limbs of the olive tree across the street wave. The tree seems to be waving good-by to spring because we have begun encountering triple digit days.

I don't like getting out of the house on triple digit days, but often I have no other choice. I just checked the temperature for Las Vegas on weather.com. According to weather.com the temperature right now is 81 degrees, but it feels like 79 degrees; I guess that is because the wind is blowing. The high today is supposed to be 84 degrees. I like those temperatures better then the triple digit temperatures we've experienced for the past few days.

I like getting out of the house better in 80 degree temperatures rather then 100 degree temperatures. I think that's because the air in my car doesn't work properly. I usually plan my trips to the store and every place else in the morning or the evening. Sometime I have to get out during the hottest part of the day, but I don't like doing that.

Monday Mumblings: Mom and the temperature in Las Vegas

Mom enjoyed herself today. I know this because I ask her when she came home around 3:30 PM. I don’t know what they did at the daycare center today because I couldn’t get Mom to say much more then that. In addition, Mom didn’t mention being cold.

It isn’t cold today in Las Vegas, but sometimes Mom gets cold even when it’s hot. I have the thermostat set at 79 degrees in the house. The cool air came on a few minutes ago. I would prefer to leave the thermostat at 79, at least when I’m home, but that depends on how Mom feels. If it turns out that she get cold then I’ll have to turn the thermostat up to 80 or 81 degrees. I don’t like to do that.

I know the power bill is higher when the thermostat is set at 79 instead of 81 degrees, but the lower temperature is more comfortable. Mom has gained weight since she started going to the daycare center, so she weighs more this spring then she did last spring. I suspect her weight had something to do with her being so cold last spring and summer. Perhaps now that she is heavier she won’t get so cold. I’ll just have to wait and see. I’ll also have to watch how much she east this year because I don’t want her getting too fat, which would not be good for her health either.

Thunder, Lightning, and Rain in Las Vegas

It is a beautiful cloudy day in Las Vegas. I hear thunder and last night I saw lightning. It rained a bit in my neighborhood. It was nice to see the rain because it has been so hot. I am glad it is raining and cool today because I have no air conditioning again. I do not know what the problem is this time, all I do know is that it would not come on yesterday even though the temperature rose to 88 and the thermostat is turned to 82.

I turned the unit off, called the tech, and now I am waiting for someone to come out and check it. Since it is raining off and on I do not need the cool air because it is cold enough for now. At least the temperatures will not get into the triple digits today.

Triple digit temperatures expected in Las Vegas

It is official; the meteorologist forecast triple digit temperatures to begin on Tuesday, June 14. The weather person said the triple digits will last three days and then drop into the 90s. I am not looking forward to these temperatures because it means I will have to get my business accomplished before 1:00 PM.

The daycare bus picks Mom up around 9:30 AM, so I have to leave the house right after the bush picks her up. My car needs a new thermostat, which means I have to check the water in the overflow and the fluid in the radiator before backing out of my driveway. I can check these items either in the evening after Mom goes to bed or in the morning before she wakes up. I also have to plan time to take the car to the mechanic, which is a problem since Mom does not leave the house until 9:30 AM. I will have to make a 10:00 or 10:30 AM appointment with the mechanic and hope he gets the car done before 3:30 PM.

I do not think I can take the car in this week because I have everything planned. I have at least two things that I cannot put off doing any longer, so I have to accomplish them this week. In addition, I do not have a working air conditioner in the car, which is another reason I am not looking forward to triple digit temperatures.

Air conditioning is nice

I have air conditioning. The unit is working and it is nice to work in a cool house. I still have a lot of work to do because it was too warm for me to work when the unit was out. We did not have triple digit temperatures in Las Vegas while the unit was not working, still the temperatures rose into the middle and high nineties.

I do not know why the temperatures affected me the way it did. Perhaps it is my age or my physical condition, but it was difficult to do anything with temperatures in the nineties. I can deal with eighty-degree temperatures without any problems, but the ninety-degree temperatures got to me.

Mom was fortunate because she went to adult daycare five days a week. The daycare center was nice and cool, it was pleasant; however, the temperatures in the house were not. I am glad the unit is fixed; I know the power bill will be high, but right now, I am just glad to have a cool house.

Last night I turned the thermostat up to eighty-one degrees and left it at that today. I may turn it up to eighty-two tonight or I may leave it at eight-one degrees. I do not think I will turn the thermostat higher then eight-three degrees because that is as high as I can go and still be comfortable. Mom does not complain about being too hot or too cold when the temperature reaches eighty-three degrees.

Another Hot day in Las Vegas

It's another hot day in Las Vegas, which means most of the local people are staying in and drinking a lot of water. I don't know what the tourist are doing because I would have to go to the Las Vegas Strip to find out and it's too hot to drive that far.

I went out once this morning, so I'm not going out again today. When the temperatures are this hot, I try to avoid leaving the house. I had to go after another case of water, some soda and to have some keys made. I'm not going out again today, if I can avoid it. I don't need to get anything else today and we have enough bottled water to last several day.

I turned the cool air on today

I turned the cool air on this morning, but the air condition has not come on all day. I set the thermostat at 79 degrees when I turned on the cool air and the temperature is about 74 degrees in Las Vegas. The air condition will not come on until the temperature in the house reaches 79 or 80 degrees.

This summer the temperature in Las Vegas will get over 100 degrees, so we will need the cool air this summer. I'm not looking forward to the power bill when temperatures rise into the triple digits, but those are the conditions you have to deal with living in Las Vegas.

Another nice day in Las Vegas

It's another nice day in Las Vegas. The temperatures were in the 80s without any wind until about an hour ago. I looked out the window and saw the limbs of the olive tree swaying. I like temperatures in the 80s because it isn't too hot or too cold and I don't have to have the air conditioner running. I think I'm going to have to turn it on Sunday or Monday, but that will be next week.

Tomorrow the temperatures are supposed to be in the 80s and then we're expecting a cool down. I'm not looking forward to triple digits, but I know they will arrive in the next few weeks. I'll turn the cool air on Monday and set the temperature at 79 or 80 degrees. Probably 79 because I think that is the recommendaed temperature for indoors.

A Variable Day in Las Vegas

The bright blue cloudless day is turning into a dull gray cloudy day. The temperature outside the house is approximately 45 degrees, while the temperature in the house is 72 degrees. It isn't cold in the house, but I feel cold. I may have to go find a long sleeved shirt to put under the sweatshirt I'm wearing.

I have leftovers in the slow cooker heating so that we can have hot soup this afternoon. I hope the soup warms me up. I'm getting tired of winter and cold weather. We may not get as cold in Las Vegas as other cities in America, but it seems cold to me. I'm looking forward to spring and summer, to warmer weather.

An update on the air conditioner issues

We still don't have a working air conditioner. The soonest we can get it fixed is Thursday, so today I'm going to make an appointment for Thursday morning. Then I can catch up on the on-line work and meeting deadlines. I don't have anything due until Friday until 9:59 Pacific time and I can spend all day Friday completing that project.

In the mean time, I'm doing the majority of my writing off line using a pen and paper. It's been a long time since I've written so much using anything except a keyboard. I can still read my own handwriting, most of the time, the biggest problem with writing that way is my creative spelling. Sometimes, the way I spell a word and it's actually spelling are worlds apart.

I check the temperature at 2:30 AM, when I got up, and again at 4:00 AM, when the alarm went off. The temperature appears to cool down between those times; therefore, I think tonight I'll sleep in my own bed instead of on the couch. There isn't any use getting up until I can work on-line for a little while in the mornings.

This is my own fault, of course. I don't have any emergency fund, which I intend to correct by opening a saving account this month. It only takes $25.00 to open the account, I think between the aluminum cans in my trunk and a little from my Social Security Check I will find the money for that. It doesn't help right now, but it will help in the future. The idea is to learn something from the tests and difficulties faced. Education of the individual is a part of transformation.

Something to Look forward to

According to the weather report I received in my e-mail box temperatures are dropping by the end of the week. That will be a nice change for Las Vegas because right now we're still in triple digits. I think the temperature today is supposed to hit 100, which doesn't sound like much in the desert. However, looking out my living room window I see clouds so it's a muggy 100 degrees.

I'm looking forward to the cooler weather especially with my car acting up. I have a new radiator, which makes the problem less of a problem. Now I don't have to worry about the radiator itself leaking. However, there are other problems. I have to put water or coolant in the radiator everyday. Driving of a morning isn't bad, but it's the afternoon driving that heats things up.

Anyway, in the afternoon when I go into the business and then I come back out I look under the car. If there is a lot of water there, I just drive straight home and forget any other business I have to conduct. I call the people and explain that my car is overheating and I'll have to reschedule. Normally, I just make one appointment each afternoon day unless Mom and I are going to the same place for different appointment.

The problem is either the water pump or the head gasket. It really doesn't matter which since I can afford to have either one of them replaced. I'll just have to look for another car or see if I'm eligible for paratransit. I know Mom is and I think I can go with her when she takes the buss. It's going somewhere by myself that's the problem. The regular bus stop is just too far for me to walk too and from with my knee in the condition it's in. Oh well, things will work out and cooler weather is something to look forward to.

Too hot for butterflies

It is too hot out doors for butterflies today. The temperature reach 108 degrees at McCarran airport, which is where the official temperature of Las Vegas is taken. The weather person expected it to get to about 109 before the sunsets and the city begins cooling down. Tomorrow the winds pick up and we are in for the blow dryer effect. After the winds pick up then the temperature will cool down to the 80s and 90s, but for now were in for, at least, one more hot day.

I put a new filter in the air conditioner Friday and turned the unit on. It appears to be working well though it takes a while to cool this house down. Fortunately, I will not know what the power bill for this month is until around June 4 or 5. I know it will come up because the last couple of months I have not had the unit on at all.

I will worry about the power bill when it comes in. I have more import problems at the moment. Starting Saturday, I am going to be doing my own yard work. Saturday I will pick up any trash in the front yard before it gets too hot. Then Sunday, if I can find my gardening gloves, see about trimming the oleanders in the front.
