Thursday Thoughts and Events: January 21, 2016

Istijlal (Majesty), 3 Sulṭán (Sovereignty), 172 BE - Thursday, January 21, 2016 about 3:30 PM Pacific Standard Time

I could call this Forgetful Thursday, but that wouldn't be completely true. I did remember to do everything except on thing today. I forgot to take the pill I'm supposed to take once a week. Since I have to take it on an empty stomach, I'll have to take it on Friday morning this week and continue that the rest of the year. I know why I forgot to take. I didn't put it down on my schedule and it is not in the pill box I use to keep track of my medication.

On the bright side, I did remember to get my car smog tested today and then go to the DMV to have my car tag renewed. However, I'll have to return to my old method of keeping track of my pill. Until this week, I put it down on my calendar to take the pill. I'll do that from now on and that way I'll remember to take the pill.

Thoughts about my Medication

Istiqlál (Independence), 4 Jalál (Glory), 170 BE - Friday, April 12, 2013 about 8:45 AM Pacific Daylight Time

I found two empty pillboxes today, one is clear so that I can see the tablets I put in and the other is white and I have to open each compartment to see what medication I put inside. The clear box I use for my morning medication and the other I use for my evening prescriptions. My doctor also wants me to take some vitamins or rather minerals for my knees, I believe I need another pillbox for those.

It is easier to remember to take my medication if I have them in pillboxes rather then the prescription bottles. If the tablets are in the daily compartments in the pillboxes then I can look to make sure I took that day's prescription. If I leave all the pills in the bottles then sometimes I forget to take the pills at the proper time or I think I took a pill when I forgot.

I found two of Mom's pillboxes, so I do not have to buy new ones for my vitamins or minerals. I washed the two that belonged to Mom out and when they dry I will put the vitamins and minerals in them. That way, I can carry them with me in my purse so that I can take them if I eat out. If I do not eat out, then I can put the pillboxes close to where I eat and I can remember to take them with my meal.

An Osteoarthritis Morning in Las Vegas

Istiqlál (Independence), 2 Mulk (Dominion), 146 B.E. - Friday, February 8, 2013 about 8:35 A.M. Pacific Time

an arctic wind blows
the bright sun cast dark shadows
no birds are singing

It's an osteoarthritis  morning, my knees are stiff so I walk like a zombie. When I went outside for the paper the wind chilled me to the bone. It's the type of day I would like to remain indoors, but that isn't possible. I have to take some items to the storage unit this afternoon which means I have to load them into the car here and unload them at the storage unit.

The loading and unloading isn't going to help my knees. The last load I took was on Wednesday, I didn't take a load Thursday because my back hurt; I must have strained it on Wednesday. I will load the car after I have breakfast and decide whether I'm going to take a pain pill before I go to the storage unit or waiting until I get home.

I may wait until I return home because if I feel today the way I did Wednesday then I will want a nap. I have difficulty sleeping when I'm in pain, so the medication will do me more good when I get home. I don't like to take pain medication unless it's absolutely necessary. My doctor advised against taking the medication unless I was in extreme pain.

An Alzheimer’s Morning: “Oh, no!”

Istiqlál (Independence), 11 Núr (Light), 169 BE – Friday, June 15, 2012 about 9:50 AM Pacific Time

It’s an Alzheimer’s morning; this is how I refer to it when Mom is upset, crying, angry, or agitated and this morning, she is crying and saying “Oh, no!”

“Mom,” I ask her, “what are you crying about?”

“Nothing,” she replies or “I don’t know.”

Mom begins crying and then a few minutes later, she says “Oh, no!”

Again, I ask, “Mom, what is wrong?”

“Nothing,” she replies. I fix her a bowl of dry cereal and this stops the crying for a few minutes, but again she says “Oh, no~” I adjust the dolls on her lap; however, this doesn’t seem to help.

The “Oh, no,” conversation could go on all morning or all day. I can’t get may to why she is upset because she doesn’t know herself. I’ve gen Mom all her morning medication, including the pill for agitation. I don’t know what else to do.

Mom moves the wheelchair with her feet. She tries to leave the room. I ask, “Mom, where are you going?”

“Anywhere,” she replies.

I pull the wheelchair back to the couch. Fortunately, if she tries to open the front door, the alarm system will say, “Front door open.”

The hospice C.N.A. came to give Mom her bath. Then about ten or fifteen minutes later, the bus from the daycare center picked her up. By the time the van got here, Mom was in a good mood and wanted to go outside. She didn’t cry or get upset when the driver pushed her wheelchair to the bus.

Mom and her medication

Jalál (Glory), 1 Jalál (Glory), 168 BE – Saturday, April 9, 2011 about 3:20 PM Pacific Time

Sometimes Mom wants to chew her medication; however, most of her meds are now chewable. When she began this, I stopped giving her more then three of the meds at a time and that seemed to take care of the issue. This morning Mom wanted to chew her meds, but one of them was not the chewable type. Therefore, starting this evening, I am going to give Mom the non-chewable meds one at a time. I hope this takes care of the issue; I can only wait and see.

Mom has Alzheimer’s disease and sometimes does not realize that she should swallow her meds rather then chew them. It makes giving her medication difficult; it would be easier if I could mix the meds with her food. However, the only ones I can mix into her food or coffee are the liquid and powders. The doctor prescribed one powder and one liquid, which the rest are tablets of some type.

When I give Mom her meds, I set beside her and watch. Being close to when she takes the tablets does not prevent her from attempting to chew them. I inform her she must swallow the tablets, but Mom does not always listen to me. The next time I see her pharmacist or doctor, I will have to discuss this issue.

Mom got up without help today

Fidál (Grace), 2 Baha (Splendor), 168 BE – Tuesday, March 22, 2011 about 8:36 AM Pacific Time

Last night was difficult for Mom. She got sick because she took some of her medication without eating. It is also possible she ate too many sweets yesterday. I thought I would have a difficult time getting her up this morning, but she got out of bed without any urging from me.

This morning she got up and came into the living room. I pointed out the bouquet of roses Mom received for her 90th birthday. Then we went back into Mom’s bedroom so she could change cloths. I found a pair of slacks that were too big for her; therefore, she decided to wear a dress.

Despite the fact that Mom had a rough night, she is in a good mood this morning. She took her first three meds without any fuss. I give her the meds after she began eating breakfast. I am watching her closely to see is she is still eating because she has three more tablets to take this morning. Then she has three and one-half tablets for lunch and six more with her evening meal. I hope she takes the rest of the meds easily today.

I have to watch what she eats closely today because there is still some birthday cake leftover. This morning she does not seem interested in the cake, but later today, she may ask for a piece.

After Sunset on Monday, March 07, 2011

Fidál (Grace), 7 ‘Alá (Loftiness), 167 BE – Monday, March 7, 2011 about 7:55 PM Pacific Time

It is after sunset and a new solar day has begun. My life has been so full of stress lately that I cannot focus on writing. I cannot seem to focus on anything except the stress. I need to relax. I need to go to a restaurant by myself and have a huge chocolate desert. I think I would like chocolate ice cream on top of a piece of chocolate cake or brownie and a cup of hot café mocha.

A new solar day has begun and it is the seventh day of the month of fasting. I cannot fast because I take medication. I take three different medications. I take four tables a day plus an eye vitamin or calcium tablet. I took the eye vitamin this morning, so I will take the calcium tablet in the morning. There is a reason for this, which I do not wish to go into at this time, perhaps in a later entry.

I am making this entry after sunset because I could not think of anything to write earlier in the day. The stress seems to be affecting my muse, as well as my memory. I noticed this afternoon that I had trouble finding the words I wanted. I think the problem is stress, but I am not sure. There could be another problem, which is affecting my memory. However, since I can still recite the Tablet of Ahmad without a prayer book in front of me, I suspect the memory issue is more about stress then anything else.

Preparing Mom’s medication for the week

Kamál (Perfection), 14 Kalimát (Words), 167 BE – Monday, July 26, 2010 about 6:59 AM Pacific Time

Mom has three pillboxes and each pillbox has seven compartments. This morning, I prepared Mom's meds for the week. I think I am rescheduling that job to Sunday afternoon. It is time consuming, but not difficult and since the compartment are labeled Sunday through Saturday it makes more sense to do it on Sunday afternoon.

Mom decided she does not need to take her medication, so when I give it to her she protest. Mom still takes her med, but she lets me know that, in her opinion, she does not need them. Since becoming Mom's caregiver, I have learned a lot about Mom and myself. I learn something new about everyday. This is becoming a transformative experience.

Reviewing January 2010

Jalál (Glory), 12 Sultán (Sovereignty), 166 BE – Saturday, January 30, 2010 about 2:24 PM Pacific Time

I know today isn't the last day of January, but I have to go to the laundromat tomorrow so I'm going to review January today. Las Vegas had more rain in January 2010 then in all 2009, as a result my car is clean on the outside. It rained so much in January that it washed all the dirt off my car, now the only thing I have left to do is clean the inside.

Numerous other interesting thins that happened during January. Last night was the Night of the Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the year. I went outside and looked up at the beautiful moon as it shown brightly through thin high clouds. I also saw Mars to the left of the moon.

In January, my mother's meds went up $3.00, the security payment down $3.00 and no they don't even out because Mom takes more then one prescription. Fortunately, my medication didn't go up, but now my mother pays more for her medication then I pay for mine. This is an interesting phenomenon because Mom has health insurance and I don't. My mother now pays $6.00 for her medication and I still pay $4.00 for mine.

On Wednesday, January 27, I renewed my car tag. After I got the smog test, I went to the DMV and used on of their kiosk, which accept debit cards, to renew my tag. It may be a little more difficult next year because on January 28, the DMV started asking for proof of insurance when you renew your tag. I have proof of insurance, but I didn't take it in with me on the 27th because it wasn't necessary.

Medication cost have doubled

Istiqlál (Independence), 4 Sultán (Sovereignty), 166 BE – Friday, January 22, 2010 about 9:17 AM Pacific Time

It's a New Year and medication cost have double, at least in our house. Mom has two prescriptions waiting at the pharmacy, but we only have enough in the bank accounts for one. I called the pharmacy to inquire about the waiting prescriptions and get the price. Between our two bank accounts there is enough to pay for one prescription.

Today I will go to the pharmacy and get the Galantamine. At this point, that is the most important of the two because she is complete out of those tablets. The other prescription, which is Spironolactone, she has two tablet left. That takes care of Saturday and Sunday, however, since my check does not arrive until Wednesday, there is a problem.

I have some aluminum cans in my trunk I can sell, but that will not bring enough for the prescription. I am putting the situation into God's hands because at this point I cannot find a solution by myself.
