A flash flood warning is in effect for the Las Vegas area until 4:00 PM
this afternoon. This makes me thankful that I don't have any
appointments today. I don't like driving in Las Vegas when it rains
because drivers here forget how to drive in the rain. I don't like
driving when there is a possibility of a flash flood because I never
know which streets will flood.
The flood control district did a lot of work a few years ago which
helped prevent a little of the flooding. One place it did a great deal
of good was the Charleston Underpass. The Underpass no longer fills with
water during a flash flood situation. The problem now is the storm
drains on the city streets. Specifically the litter that clogs the storm
drains.
Litter clogs the storm drain, this prevents flood water from draining
off the streets, and this causes the streets to run curb deep in
rainwater draining off yards and parking lots. As a results, it is
difficult to drive because of the standing or flowing water. When you
look at the water it appears easy to drive through, but it's not. You
can drive your car into the water and the car will stall because the
water is too high and floods the car out. The best way to deal with
overflowing streets in Las Vegas is "Turn around don't drown!"
