Closing out 2009

Istijlál (Majesty), 1 Sharaf (Honor), 166 BE – Thursday, December 31, 2009 about 3:38 PM Pacific Time

An eventful and interesting year draws to an end. I end the year with one olive and two stone pine trees in my yard. I end the year without a vacation home parked in my yard. I end the year with a complete set of dentures.

During 2009 my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and my doctor found a lump in my breast. Mom now takes medication for Alzheimer's, which is supposed to slow the progress of the disease. I have an appointment with a breast specialist on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 12:30 PM, with an arrival time at 12:00 PM.

In some ways, 2009 was less stressful then 2007 or 2008, but in other ways more stressful. I am looking forward to 2010, but then I always look forward to a New Year. A New Year is like a new loaf of bread there are so many sandwiches that you look forward to making and eating them.

I never know whether a year is going to be good, bad or somewhere in between. I have to live it one day at a time. Some days are good and some bad, but all those days go into making the year. I am looking forward to 2010 with hope and faith.

The blessings of a new week

Jamál (Beauty), 19 Qudrat (Power), 166 BE – Sunday, November 22, 2009 about 12:32 PM Pacific Time

Thanksgiving week 2009 has begun. The morning was difficult and I suspect every morning for the next 30 to 60 days will be difficult. Afternoons are better, easier, less difficult; I'm beginning to like afternoons. I wish I could sleep until noon, but I can't do that so I have to deal with the difficult mornings.

Difficult mornings
make for an interesting life
doctors' appointments.

This week is full of activity. Monday I peck up a new prescription for my Mother and then pick up a refill for myself. Tuesday I go to the dentist to have my upper plate adjusted. Wednesday we (my mother and I) doing laundry. All these activities are planned for the afternoon because mornings are difficult.

Difficult mornings
afternoon activities
Las Vegas awaits.

On Thanksgiving, I am not going to cook the turkey in the freezer. Instead, I will either fix the ham roast or the flank steaks we have in the freezer. I should fix the flank steaks since they've been in the freezer the longest.

Mom and I don't have a traditional Thanksgiving, unless we go out to a restaurant or to someone else's home. At present, I don't know what were going to do on Thanksgiving, except have a difficult morning. Since this entry is beginning to look like a rant and I'm not willing to go into why mornings are difficult, I'm going to close this post now.

Good-by August 2009

Interesting August
hot beautiful desert days
praying for rain.

All right, I couldn't resist writing one more haiku in August. September begins at midnight and September always brings back intriguing memories from my childhood. Labor Day is always a day to remember my grandparents and Blackwell, Oklahoma.

On the last Day of August 2009

Kamál (Perfection), 12 Asmá’ (Names), 166 BE – Monday, August 31, 2009 about 6:41 AM Pacific Time

On the last day of August 2009, I'm remembering Grandma Newland and applesauce. I opened a can of applesauce for breakfast this morning. The applesauce brought my Grandmother to mind because she made her own applesauce.

When Grandma made applesauce, she would peel the apples, core them and then cut them into slices. After preparing the apples in this way, she would put them in a large boiler, add sugar, and cover them with water. I'm sure Grandma added sugar, I also think she add ground cinnamon. I don't remember how much sugar or cinnamon Grandma added.

After the applesauce finished cooking, Grandma would let each of her grandchildren have a small bowl of hot applesauce. I will eat homemade applesauce hot; however, when I open a can of store bought applesauce I want it cold.

Midweek Reflections Wednesday, June 17, 2009

‘Idál (Justice), 13 Nur (Light), 166 BE – Wednesday, June 17, 2009 about 2:06 AM Pacific Time

It's Wednesday again. Hump day and the week is half over. This is June the sixth month of the year and 2009 is half over. I realized today that I don't actually remember very much of 2007. It was a stressful year and I'm surprised I remember anything at all about it.

This realization occurred to me when I was checking the contents of my port at writing.com. Of course, my Mother spent most of 2007 in the hospital, so I'm surprised I remember anything at all about that year. Anyway I found two poem I wrote in January and February and realized I didn't remember writing them, but I know I wrote them.

It's up setting realizing that an entire year is a fog of chaos and worry. I know that the stress of what occurred that year is the reason I don't remember a lot of what went on. You see that was the year my Mother turned 86 in the operating room. Mom's recovering nicely and this year she turned 88.

Many other things happened this week, but the memory thing is the most important. It shook me up that an entire year just seemed to be in a fog. The incidents I do remember occurred in stressful moments. I think Mom and I are still recovering form 2007. Oh well, life goes on moving from week to week, from Wednesday to Wednesday and we must handle the stress that comes with living.

Good-bye 2008 and Hello 2009

Istijlál (Majesty), 2 Sharaf (Honor), 165 BE – Thursday, January 1, 2009 about 1:49 PM Pacific Time

Happy New Year

You know that it's going to be a good year when
your bank account isn't overdrawn on January 1.

I started off the New Year right with a prayer right after I got out of bed. In addition, I received the holiday edition of the local newspaper and I have half a tank of gas left from the gas I bought last year.

I'm looking forward to 2009 and to celebrating Naw-Ruz on March 21. I reset my writing word count goal and increased it by 19%. Now I have the time between January 1 and March 21, to determine if its too low or too high.

Today, I'm not worried about anything and I do have several things to worry about. However, I put aside my worries on the first day of the year, not matter what year or when I celebrate. This means that I put aside my worries at least twice in 2009. On January 1 and on March 21, this gives me a chance to unstress for a little while.

Happy New Year

Winter in Las Vegas

Fidál (Grace), 19 Masa’il (Questions), 165 BE – Tuesday, December 30, 2008 about 10:23 AM Pacific Time

It's winter in Las Vegas and I'm noticing the cold. I don't remember noticing the cold when I was growing up in Oklahoma. I don't think children notice the cold as much as adults. I don't think tourist notice the cold as much as locals. I'm a local. I wasn't born in Las Vegas, but I've lived here long enough to be considered a local.

I have the central heat on. I will either gripe or worry about the power bill when it comes in, but that will be after January 1, 2009. In the mean time, I'm not going to worry about the power bill. Since the New Year is close I have other things to occupy my time. I have to make a list of stuff I'm going to have to buy in the New Year.

One thing I'm going to have to buy is a refrigerator. I'd like to buy a new one because then I can get a rebate from the Power Company. At least, I think they still give rebates on stuff like that. However, I think I may have to opt for a used fridge. There are some second hand stores here that sell appliances, I'll check them next week and clean the fridge I have out on Friday or Saturday.

I took some leftovers out today and put them in the slow cooker. We're having Hobo stew today, which is good on a cold day like this.

Looking forward to a better year in 2009

Kamál (Perfection), 18 Masa’il (Questions), 165 BE – Monday, December 29, 2008 about 8:53 AM Pacific Time

I am looking forward to a better year in 2009. Despite parts of 2008 being as stressful and difficult as 2007, for the most part it was a better year. My attitude was part of the stress; I did not attempt to look beyond the roadblocks that appeared in my path. Things happened during 2008 I could do nothing about and I did not take some of them very well.

I have come to realize that the only way to make 2009 better is to change my attitude and expect good things to happen. Tests and difficulties are a part of the transformation process and I must view them as such. Instead, I viewed some of those tests and difficulties as roadblocks intended to stop my progress.

I have noticed in the past few days, that the end of 2008 is much better then the end of 2007. At least, on a personal level, but I still have a long way to go. One thing I have been doing is making daily entries in my gratitude journal. I attempt to find at least ten things each day to be grateful for and list them in my gratitude journal. So far, I have found at least ten things to be thankful for each day.

Everyone is making resolutions for 2009

Jamál (Beauty), 17 Masa’il (Questions), 165 BE – Sunday, December 28, 2008 about 10:18 AM Pacific Time

All most everyone is making New Year's resolutions for 2009. I'm in the process of reviewing the goals I made during 2008. Normally I don't make or set any resolutions or goal until March 21, when I celebrate a New Year. However, 2008 was a weird and stressful year so I need to reevaluate my goals earlier then usual.

I have decided to focus on the goals listed in my personal "60 things to do in my 6th" decade list. I started the list when I turned 60 in 2006. In 2007, my mother went into the hospital and my world fell apart. In 2008, Mom and I spent most of the year recovering from 2007. I have reevaluated my 6th decade list, I have replaced some of the goals with others that are more important.

I have now begun focusing on the list and determining how to achieve it. I have the short term benchmarks in place and am working on the list now. True I am still having difficulties and distractions, but those are a part of achieving goals. Tests, difficulties and distractions are a part of the transformation process and always there. The ideas is to deal with them or overcome them as they appear.

I am looking forward to 2009. I always look forward to a New Year whether it begins on January 1 or on March 21. New Years are like new cars and new shoes, they have such sweet smells for the first month or so. After that the aroma changes and you have to begin spraying them with odor eliminators so that you can either drive them or wear them.
