On the last Day of August 2009

Kamál (Perfection), 12 Asmá’ (Names), 166 BE – Monday, August 31, 2009 about 6:41 AM Pacific Time

On the last day of August 2009, I'm remembering Grandma Newland and applesauce. I opened a can of applesauce for breakfast this morning. The applesauce brought my Grandmother to mind because she made her own applesauce.

When Grandma made applesauce, she would peel the apples, core them and then cut them into slices. After preparing the apples in this way, she would put them in a large boiler, add sugar, and cover them with water. I'm sure Grandma added sugar, I also think she add ground cinnamon. I don't remember how much sugar or cinnamon Grandma added.

After the applesauce finished cooking, Grandma would let each of her grandchildren have a small bowl of hot applesauce. I will eat homemade applesauce hot; however, when I open a can of store bought applesauce I want it cold.

Applesauce for Breakfast

My mother can't eat applesauce and we have several cans in our house. Since Mom can't eat it, I'm going to have applesauce for everyday breakfast for the next few weeks. I put the cans in the fridge so they are cold when I eat the contents. I like applesauce, I just don't like to eat it if it isn't cold.

Today I'm just having a can of applesauce. Yes, the entire can of applesauce, which is 3.5 servings. Tomorrow I think I will have the applesauce over my cereal instead of milk. There are several different ways a person can eat applesauce. I'm going to find them all. Perhaps I'll try the applesauce with just milk, that sounds good.

A person is supposed to have a variety of foods. We do have a variety of foods in the house, but I'm the only one that can eat applesauce without a problem. My problem with apples comes with the whole fruit. I have to peel and cut up a whole apple before I can eat it. My grandmother had the same problem; she couldn't eat whole apples without peeling and cutting them into sections.

I’m back and with a full set of dentures

Istiqlál (Independence), 11 Jamál (Beauty), 166 BE – Friday, May 8, 2009 about 5:03 PM Pacific Time

Yesterday, Thursday, May 7, the dentist extracted the other four teeth in my lower jaw and put the rest of my dentures in my mouth. I described part of the experience in More Snow Melt my writing.com blog. The title of the entry is be careful what you wish for. So if you want to read it go ahead, be aware that the rating of that particular blog has a rating of 18+.

I have a full set of dentures, which I will get used to over the next few days. Today the dentist said to wear them two hours and then extend them by an hour each day. That's all right with me, since eating is a bit of a problem right now. My gums are healing and I can't use anything to hold the dentures in until the gums are healed.

Today I'm eating unsweetened applesauce, which I'm not crazy about. However, that is what I took out of the cupboard. Since Mom can't eat applesauce at all, I'm going to have to eat all that we have in the house, which is a lot. I think later I will a eat another can of applesauce, but mix it with yogurt. I like yogurt and it ought to give an interesting flavor to the applesauce. Of course, after my gums heal I may never want to eat applesauce again, but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

I'm also rinsing my mouth with warm salt water about five times a day. The salt water helps the gums to heal and I'm looking forward to the gums healing. After my gums are healed then the dentist will line them. At that time, Mom and I are going out for prime rib with raw horseradish sauce. The raw horseradish is for me, Mom eats the other kind.

Unfortunately, my gums won't be healed by Mothers' Day, so the only thing I'm eating when we go out is an ice cream desert. I doubt that I could handle much else since my lower plate wants to move in my mouth. Fortunately, I can still drink coffee.

Tomorrow I have the rest of my teeth pulled

Kamál (Perfection), 3 Bahá (Splendor), 166 BE – Monday, March 23, 2009 about 4:42 PM Pacific Time

Tomorrow, March 24, I have the rest of my teeth pulled and my bottom dentures put in. My appointment is at 8:30 AM in the morning, after my teeth are extracted I will come home, take a pain pill and go to bed for two or three hours.

My diet for the next few days will consist of apple sauce, coffee, hot tea, and water. I have two bottles of the flavored water in the fridge cooling. When I get home from the dentist I will open one and drink for the rest of the day.

I can't wait to have the rest of my teeth pulled and the rest of my new dentures put in. I'm going to chew better then I do now. I'll still be cutting my fruit up to eat it for a while, but that isn't a problem because I've been doing that for years.

At least, I've been cutting my apples up. I can't remember the last time I took a bit out of a whole apple. I also remember my grandmother cutting her apples up when she ate them. Grandma never took a bit out of an intact apple. She not only cut the apple up, she peeled it as well. I don't think I'll go to the trouble of peeling them, not for a while anyway, but I'm going to cut them up before I eat them.

After a long day, I need to write

The process of transformation isn't easy. Every day I learn something that carries the process forward. One thing I learned today, is that I can't go without breakfast. I have an ulcer and if I don't eat breakfast my ulcer acts up, which isn't a pleasant experience.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about breakfast for a while. The reason for this is that I have a cupboard full of cereal. I also have canned and powdered milk. That's good because I have to eat breakfast or my ulcer acts up.

I like cereal, I would rather have yogurt to eat with it. I don't have any yogurt so I will have milk on the cereal. If I get tired of cereal and milk then I will eat applesauce and cereal. Actually, that last combination sounds good so perhaps I'll try that in the morning.

I have found that prayer also helps alleviate the ulcer. I'm a worrier so I'm not surprised that I have an ulcer. I'm just going to have to learn to let go. I have to learn to let go and write, because I have found that writing and worrying at the same time is difficult.

There are certain things that I can't do at the same time. I can't write and worry any more then I can pray and worry. Those two activities, praying and writing, alleviate worry. Once the worry is gone then the ulcer doesn't act up as much. I'm still going to have to eat breakfast, but a person should eat breakfast anyway.
