snowy Oklahoma winters,

Winter Solistice Memories
Flicks of light
reflect from tumbling leaves,
as starlight dances to the ground
autumn gives birth to winter.
Blue-gray clouds protect
Last minute Christmas shoppers
From the sun's cold rays.

Sundry Sunday: The Fourth Sunday of January 2016
Jamal (Beauty), 6 Sulṭán (Sovereignty), 172 BE - Sunday, January 24, 2016 about 10:02 AM Pacific Standard Time
It's the fourth Sunday in January 2016
on the east coast they are digging
of the Blizzard of 2016,
while here in Las Vegas
the temperature is a brisk 56 degrees
with the sun shining
on ground that isn't covered
by snow.
Brisk may not be a precise description of the weather here in Las Vegas. To me the air feels cold and enlivening, but I'm not sure how fresh it is. I think there is something in the air that's causing my sinuses to act up; however, I could feel that way because it's too cold to open the door to let the fresh air in. It will be too cold to open the door until Wednesday or Thursday when the temperature is predicted to rise into the mid sixties.
I haven't heard the birds sing in the morning for several weeks, not since the morning temperatures descended into the fifties. Maybe the birds like higher morning temperatures. If that's the case then they won't sing until afternoon when the temperatures rise into the high fifties or low sixties. All though, I don't think the temperature is supposed to get above 58 or 59 degrees today. Oh ell, it will get hot soon enough, I guess I should enjoy the cooler pleasant temperatures while they last. It doesn't do any good to grip about the weather anyway.

Midweek Reflections on the Second Week in January 2016
Idal (Justice), 14 Sharaf (Honor), 172 BE - Wednesday, January 13, 2016 about 7:48 AM Pacific Standard Time
It's a beautiful January morning here in Las Vegas. The temperature at 6:56 AM was 35 degrees and rising. It is suppose to get up to about 36 degrees by 8:00 AM. It is mostly sunny with snow on Mount Charleston. It's a nice winter day to remain indoors where it is warm. Therefore, I'm not planning on doing much today except making some phone calls and writing a couple of checks.
My exercise plan for today is walking through the house or going outside to the mail box. I want to get the laundry ready for a trip to the laundromat sometime later this week or early next week. I also have to go somewhere for a smog check because my tag is due for renewal on January 27. On Thursday I have a doctor's appointment at 10:00 AM and then on Friday I have a Tai Chi class at 9:30 or 10:00 AM. This afternoon I have to move the car from the front of the apartment to the back because they street sweep cleans the street between 7:30 and 8:00 AM on Friday; I don't want another parking ticket so I have to move the car to the alley before the city street sweeper arrives.

Midweek Reflections on Weather
‘Idál (Justice), 14 Mulk (Dominion), 169 B.E. - Wednesday, February 20, 2013 about 6:50 A.M. Pacific Time
According to weather.com the temperature in Las Vegas will be in the high fifties with A.M. showers. I can remember when the only way to get the daily weather forecast was to turn on the television or radio and listen to the news. Now I can find out the weather for Las Vegas or any other part of the country or the world by turning on my computer and going to a website.
I also checked the weather across the country, especially in the central plains. The weather map of that area indicated snow for Kansas and norther Oklahoma. My father's family lives in Kansas, while Mom's relatives live in northern Oklahoma. I was born and raised in Blackwell, Oklahoma, which is close to the Kansas border. I can remember snow storm from my childhood that closed roads and caused brown outs.
I think, the snow storms I remember took place around Christmas or New Year and not in late February. Of course, that was a long time ago and I was a child. Children remember snow storms and bad weather conditions different from the way adults remember them. Still, I think the weather patterns and conditions have change a great deal since I was a child.

It is still raining in Las Vegas
Fidál (Grace), 10 Masá’il (Questions), 167 BE – Tuesday, December 21, 2010 about 9:50 AM Pacific Time
It rained all day yesterday and it is still raining today. It is a gentle rain, but in Las Vegas, a gentle rain can still cause problems. If it rains long enough it will soak the ground and this being a desert will probably cause flooding. According to this morning’s weather e-mail, a record was set on December 20th with 4” of rain recorded at McCarran airport.
In Mesquite, they expect the Virgin River to flood sometime today, while the meteorologist forecast 2 to 4 feet of snow for the mountains above 7,000 feet. Winter has arrived in the desert. Winter has arrived in Las Vegas and more rain is on the way.
I’m not looking forward to driving in the rain, but I have a prescription to pick up at Smith’s Food and Drug store. When I took the prescriptions in last Friday, the pharmacist had to order one of the meds. It was supposed to be in yesterday, but the only prescription I was able to pick up was for my mother. I’ll call to make sure the prescription is in and then go to the pharmacy this afternoon.

It rained last night
Fidál (Grace), 1 Sultán (Sovereignty), 166 BE – Tuesday, January 19, 2010 about 10:41 AM Pacific Time
Last night cold rain fell
and when it touched my bare hands
sent chills up my spine.
I don't enjoy late winter rain because it's so cold. When rain touches my bare hands in wintertime I get chills. There are three more winter storms headed for Las Vegas, which means a week of rain and cold in the valley. The storms will bring snow to the mountains.
I haven't visited the mountains in several years. I probably won't visit them any time soon, especially if it's snowing up there. I don't have chains for my tires and that's what a person needs to drive up to the mountains in winter.

A beautiful December day in Las Vegas
Jalál (Glory), 8 Masá’il (Questions), 166 BE – Saturday, December 19, 2009 about 4:18 PM Pacific Time
Beautiful December
feathery clouds hide the sun
no wind chill factor.
It's December in Las Vegas, chilly but not cold. The sky is covered by feathery clouds without ground level winds. It's a nice winter day in the desert.
Ski jacket ready
for the cold December winds
white clouds without snow.

I Remember Standing in the Doorway of my Grandparent’s house
Jalál (Glory), 4 Sharaf (Honor), 165 BE – Saturday, January 3, 2009 about 10:11 AM Pacific Time
I remember standing in the doorway of my Grandparent's house, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, and watching the snow fall. It wasn't the first snow I had ever witnessed because at the time I must have been six or seven years old. It wasn't the first snow of that year either, because my Grandma Newland was going to make snow ice cream and Grandma didn't make that until after the second or third snowfall of the year.
I remember I was standing in kitchen door and I heard a cabinet door opening. I turned to see what was going on and Grandma was taking a stone mixing bowl out of the cupboard. Next, she opened the drawer with the mixing spoons and removed a large wooden spoon. After that, she got the vanilla flavoring down and took measuring spoons out of another drawer.
My Grandpa then took the stone mixing bowl and went outside. He went around the house to the front yard. There he filled the mixing bow with snow and brought it back into the house. Grandma took the bowl from him, measured a teaspoon of vanilla, put it into the bowl and mixed the flavoring into the snow. Grandma then took cereal bowls out of the cupboard and filled them with the snow ice cream. This was my favorite winter treat.

Remembering Winter in Oklahoma
Fidal (Grace), 9 Sharaf (Honor) 164 B.E. - Monday, January 7, 2008 about 5:24 PM PST
I'm remembering winter in Oklahoma. Specifically the years when the snow was so deep we had difficulty opening the doors. The backdoor to my grandparent's house had a screen door that opened out. I remember snow so deep that when we tried to open the screen door it wouldn't open. In order to get the door open, my grandfather went out either the front door or a window (I can't remember which) and shoveled the snow away from the door so we could get to the garage and the chicken house.
About midday, the snow shovels would get to our street and clear one lane of traffic. Not that there was anywhere to go because snow that deep meant school was closed. Snow days were always nice, because we could stay home and play in the snow. Children seem to handle snow differently than adults they don't seem to get as cold or perhaps it's just that children know how to play and ignore the cold.
I wrote a poem in another blog about the difference between the experience of winter as a child and the way I experience it now. That poem is called The Experience of Winter.
