Midweek Reflections on Wednesday

It's half-way through the third week of April 2016, so it's obviously Wednesday. AKA Hump Day or "there are two day left in the workweek so please don't bother me until I get this project finished because the deadline is Friday". Wednesday, the day everyone in the office begins to wonder what everyone else is doing on the weekend.
Wednesday is a good day to write. Of course, for me everyday is a good day to write. However, today is special because it's the First Day of Ridvan. I celebrated the day by writing a poem about the day. I will write another Ridvan poem tomorrow and for the next twelve days. On Saturday, April 22, which is Earth day, I will write two poems. One about Ridvan and one about Earth Day.

Midweek Reflections: Holiday, Holy Days, Days of Celebration, Days of Commemoration, etc.

The Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere occurs at 3:45 pm Pacific Daylight Time on Friday, March 20.
Naw-Ruz, the first day of the Baha'i year of B.E., begins at sunset on Friday, March 20. and ends at sunset on Saturday, March 21.
The Twelve Days of Ridvan began at sunset on Monday, April 20, and end at sunset on Saturday, May 2.
Good Friday, occurs on Friday, April 3.
Easter occurs on Sunday, April 5,
Earth Day occurs on Wednesday, April 22.
I am sure there are other interesting celebrations occurring between Thursday, March 19, and Sunday, May 3, but these are the only ones that interest me at this time. The holiday and holy days I will celebrate are Naw-Ruz and the Twelve Days of Ridvan. On the other days, I will write a blog entry about some aspect of them. The entry may concern a memory form childhood, an observation of the way someone celebrates the day, or I may write a poem and/or story about that specific day. This morning I am not sure about the approach I will take in any of those blog entries. Nor have I decided to which blog I will post the entry. The only thing I am sure about is that I will post an entry about the day or the celebration.

Spiritual Sunday: Am I doing enought for Mother Earth?

Am I doing enough for Mother Earth? When I lived in the house I attempted to recycle by putting cans, glass, newspapers, and plastics in the recycle bins and carrying them to the curb every-other Saturday. Now that I live in an apartment, I recycle only the aluminum which I either sell myself or give to one of the people who checks for aluminum cans in the dumpsters.
The approach of Earth Day (Tuesday, April 22) caused me to ask two questions: (1) Am I doing enough for Mother Earth? and (2) Does the way humanity treats Mother Earth have an effect on our spirituality? The first question I can answer easily with a "No!" because there are probably other things I can do to help the planet. The second question I don't have an easy or a clear answer for and I'm not sure anyone does. It is a question that takes more research then I have done at present.

Earth Day: The Faces of Climate Change

I see the faces of climate change.

in scorched fields
waiting for rain that will never come.
I see the faces of climate change,
in the eyes of mothers
wondering where they will find food
for their starving children.
I see the faces of climate change,
in dust clouds
of fertile topsoil
blowing across once prosperous
farm land.
I see the faces of climate change,
in the faces of animals
searching for green
in the middle of brown and dying
meadow.
Everywhere I look,
I see the faces of climate change.

Earth Day at home in Las Vegas

It is Earth Day and I am at home. I am sitting down for a
few minutes before taking recyclables to the garage. I did not get the
recyclable bins carried to the curb yesterday, so I will have to wait until the
first Saturday in May to lug them to the curb. I really need a little red wagon
or something to put the bins in to roll them to the curb, but since I do not
have anything like that, I may start taking them out on Friday evening before
the sun goes down.
Earth Day is a good day for a picnic, but that is not
possible for me today. Especially since, I did not clean the car out last week.
In order to take Mom out I need to put her wheel chair in the backseat and my
backseat if full. I have some blankets in the back seat that I need to take to
the laundromat because they are too bulky for my top loader. Staying home on
Earth Day does have its advantages. I have did three small loads of clothes and
I have one more to wash.
Earth Day is beautiful in Las Vegas , at least the part of it I can see
from my living room window or when I go to the garage. There are no clouds in
the sky and no wind or just a slight breeze. It is warm outside, I am not sure,
but I think the temperature forecast for today was somewhere in the 90s. Have a
Happy Earth Day and recycle as much as possible.

I am going paperless

It is Wednesday and time for midweek reflections. I am considering going paperless. This week, I realized there is too much mail coming to my house. Most of the mail is junk or flyers, which I cannot control. I can control the amount of bills that come through the mail slot.
Since I pay most of the bills online, a hard copy of the bill is not necessary. I can go paperless and a bill will come to my e-mail box instead of through the front door. I can find the bill easier that way. Since Earth Day is coming up, I will give Mother Earth a birthday present and go paperless.
If I need a hard copy of a power bill or water bill, then I can print a copy. My printer works, after a fashion. It jams if I attempt to print more then one page at a time, but I can deal with that issue. Therefore, in the next seven days I will log into the websites and indicate that I want to go paperless, so that the bills come to the e-mail box instead of the house.

It hailed in Las Vegas on Earth Day

Mom and I went to the Institute for the Blind to enroll her as a member and get her a pair of glasses. While we were there, it hailed. The hail wasn't very big, probably about the size of buck shot or slightly larger. It fell from the sky like little white stones. The hail came down faster then snow, all though it was about the same color. I haven't witnessed hail in a long time, it was an interesting sight.
I think hail on Earth Day is appropriate because it reminds us about nature and the Earth. I know this sounds odd, but I enjoyed watching the hail. Of course, at the time I wasn't driving in it, so that made a difference because I could watch the hail without worrying about it or the traffic.

Earth Day is Coming Soon

Earth Day is coming soon. There will be a lot of talk about planting trees and recycling among other related topics. The approach of Earth Day got me to thinking about my grandparents. We never thought much about recycling when I was growing up. However, my grandmother was good at recycling.
My grandmother recycled as much as she could. Instead of buying rags to clean the toilet, she used warn out underpants for that. My grandmother would not throw out the coffee grounds, instead she put them on her flowers. When grandpa cleaned out the chicken house, he used that for fertilizer. My grandmother's flowers were beautiful.
My grandfather planted trees, which were appropriate to the climate. He didn't plant a tree that took a lot of care to grow in Oklahoma. If he had lived in Nevada or some other desert he would have used desert landscaping. Of course, my grandparents were farmers before they moved into town. That may have had something to do with the care they took of the environment before it became fashionable.
