Saturday at last
time to plan the coming week:
Clean the refrigerator?
I have lights in my kitchen. The maintenance tech came yesterday and put
light bulbs in every socket in t he house. I can now see to clean the
stove, sweep the floors, and other things I need lights before I could
clean them. I suppose I should start with the kitchen floor or under the
kitchen sink. Under the kitchen sink is the easiest (I think). I have
Pine Sol original and a sponge mop. I am not going to get down on my
hands and knees to clean the floor. If I did that I would never be able
to stand up. In fact, I would have to crawl into the living room so I
could use the couch to help me get up off the floor.
I think t he best place to start is in the kitchen and that means I
need to wash my mop bucket out again. I have to wash it out because I
used it as a trash can and the plastic sack leaked. I can wash the mop
bucket out tonight and then mop under the kitchen sink in the morning. I
have t o mop under the sink because a plastic bag I used for trash
leaked. The lesson in this is never put a trash in a plastic bag unless
you have a trashcan to put the plastic bag in.

I still have a hospital bed in my dining room

I still have a hospital bed in my dining room. It and the wheel chair were supposed to be pick up and taken away today. It's still here setting in my dining room, the only difference between today and yesterday is now the bed is setting in the middle of the floor and unplugged. I'm not going to plug it back into the electricity or move it close to the wall.
I want my dining room back. I want my dining room table out of my living room and back where it belongs. The only thing that we accomplished this morning was sweeping where the bed used to be. I haven't mopped yet, but I'll do that either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. I'll mop the floor if the bed is gone.
In order to mop, I have to move the bed around when I mop the floor. True, the bed is on rollers, so it isn't that difficult to roll and it doesn't seem exceptionally heavy. Of course, I've only moved it so my mother can sweep the floor; I haven't moved it while I'm in the middle of mopping the floor.

I bought a new mop today

I bought another new mop today. I went to The Home Depot and bought a heavy duty spaghetti mop with a mop head made with real cotton fibers. In addition to the mop, I bought two extra mop heads, so that when the first one gets dirty I have an extra. Of course, I can wash the mop head if it get excessively dirty (mops have a tendency to do this).
I think I'm going to like this mop because it is similar to the type of mop my grandmother used, when she didn't use a rag mop. I would rather have heavy duty spaghetti mops made with cotton fibers because they clean better and I can clean the mop head easily. Of course, no mop head last forever that's why I bought the two extra mop heads.
All right, I might be over doing it a bit with this mop thing. However, I don't like sponge mops and I haven't found any other mop that cleans like a spaghetti mop made with cotton fibers. I bought a new mop bucket at The Home Depot a few days ago. Now I have a new mop and I'm looking forward to using the mop. I think I'll try using it in the entrance hall first and then move on to another room.
I could be putting too much into this mop thing. Let's face it no mop cleans perfectly, but some mops work better than others. I just want a mop that I can use with my new mop bucket and will get a floor clean at the same time.

I bought a new mop bucket

I finally bought a new mop bucket. The wringer kind that squeezes the mop out. The old mop bucket is a recycled cat litter bucket, but it doesn't have a way to wring the mop out. In order to wring out the mop, with the old mop bucket, I had to wring the mop out by hand.
Yes, that was yucky!. If I didn't want to get my hands wet and dirty I had to use rubber gloves or disposable gloves. Yes, that was yucky, as well. Now I put the wet mop in the basket of the wringer and squeeze the water out. This isn't yucky and I don't have to get my hands wet.
I bought a plastic mop bucket with rollers, so now I can roll the bucket through the house rather then carrying from room to room. It's much easier and less messy because I spill less water then I did carrying an old cat litter bucket from room to room.
Let's face it, my mother is 88 years old and I'm 62; neither of us needs to carry a mop bucket full of water through the house. My mother still insists she wants to mop the floors, so this way I can fill the mop bucket and either of us can roll it through the house.
The next thing I need to get is another new mop. I have one new mop, but it's not the type to use with this type of mop bucket. The new mop is one of those that lets you squeeze the water out with an attachment to the mop. I've never liked that type of mop, they never work like there supposed to work. So now I have to get a new mop to go with the new mop bucket.

My Grandmother’s Mop

My grandmother's mop was a large piece of cloth taken from her ragbag. The mop handle was wooden and on the end was a way to fasten either a cloth or a spaghetti mop head. My grandmother always used a large piece of cloth. I thank the cloth was from an old blouse or dress because when cloths wore out she put piece of the clothing in her ragbag.
I remember my grandmother's mop fondly. As a child, I watched her mop the floor. The way she mopped her floor fascinated me. Grandma always used a rag mop rather then a spaghetti mop. She put a new rag mop in about once every couple of weeks or perhaps once a month.
Grandma filled the mop bucket and then she put mop in the bucket. Before she mopped the floor she would wring the mop out by hand and then mop. She put fresh hot water in the bucket with each room she mopped. Sometimes grandma would put bleach in the water, especially when she mopped the kitchen, laundry room, or the bathroom. However, most of the time she used a pine smelling cleaner in her mop water.
I think I will find a mop handle like my grandmother used and try mopping with a rag mop. I may not like it any better then I like a sponge mop or a spaghetti mop, but it will be a different experience. A rag mop will be a lot easier to wring out then a spaghetti mop. Since I already know three ways I don't like to mop a floor maybe I'll find a fourth way.

Vineger in the Mop water

My grandmother put vinegar in the mop water when she mopped her linoleum floors. The house had linoleum throughout the house. Grandma never had carpet or tile in her house. When she mopped the kitchen and bathroom floor she put vinegar in the mop water.
I'm not sure why she did that, perhaps it was to make the linoleum shine or to kill germs. I never did ask her why. There were a lot of thing Grandma did that I never asked her why she did them. Now I wish I had because it would have been nice to know. My grandmother used vinegar for a lot of things. She used vinegar when she cooked. She used vinegar when she cleaned.
I remembered this last night when I went to clean the spaghetti mop head. I have to get a new mop head for that mop, but for now I'll just clean it with vineger. I don't put very much vinegar in the water because a little bit will do. I've about decided that I don't like spaghetti mops. I don't like sponge mops, they are worse then spaghetti mops. At least, a spaghetti mop cleans up better then a sponge mop.
I have to get a new mop head and I'm considering getting a new mop. I know it's a waste of a perfectly good mop handle. I'm still looking for the perfect mop to mop my floors. All right, maybe there is no such thing as the perfect mop. Perhaps what I need to do is look for the attributes I want in a mop and then find one that comes close to what I want.
I have to admit that the perfect house-cleaning item would be a robot or a house that cleans itself. I want a robot that will do everything from laundry to mopping the floor and cleaning the toilet. However, I still need to get another mop head the next time I go shopping. I also need to make a grocery list, but that is another blog entry.
