Works for me Wednesday: A trip to the Farmer's Market

‘Idál (Justice), 17 Jamál (Beauty), 171 BE - Wednesday, May 15, 2014 about 5:15 pm Pacific Daylight Time

This morning I picked up my senior commodities and went to the Farmer's Market to spend the $18.00 in coupons I had left. The Farmer's Market was in the parking lot of the place I picked up the commodities, so I had to make only one trip. I plan my trips to the grocery stores, library, and gas station so that I have to make only one or two trips in a day. I especially like going to stores that are in the same section of town because I use less gas.

I have not checked everything I received in the commodities, but I do know one of the bags contained a small jar of peanut butter. Now all I have to do, when I go to the grocery store tomorrow, is get some bread so that I can have a peanut butter sandwich. I also need to get some spices and maybe a jar of honey. I have to check to potassium content of honey before I purchase any. It is difficulty enough figuring out what items I can eat and if I have to cut the serving size to make sure the potassium content is on the low side.

Fortunately, I have access to the internet. I can search for the potassium content in foods. I also have two website on my favorites list that I can use to check the potassium content in my food. It takes a while to do this, but if I plan my menu two to four days ahead then I can keep my potassium intake low. This approach to my diet works for me most of the time.

Foodie Friday: Coupons for the Farmers' Market

Istiqlál (Independence), 15 Bahá (Splendor), 171 BE - Friday, April 4, 2014 about 1:41 pm Pacific Daylight Time

I have $30.00 in Farmers' Market Coupons, a partial list of locally available produce, one location, and dates of upcoming Farmers' Markets.Next week the Market will be on Monday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 8, I am planning to go on one of those dates. The produce that (I know) will be available are asparagus, cherries, greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, rhubarb, strawberries, spinach, and Swiss chard. I know that I want to get rhubarb and either asparagus or Swiss chard, but before I decide on which I have to check the potassium level in those vegetables.

I can determine the potassium level in each of those vegetables by going to foodfacts.com and searching for the ingredients by product name. This is a big help when it comes to following a low potassium diet because once I find out how many milligrams of potassium a vegetable for fruit contains, I know if I can eat it and the amount I can consume at one meal.

This will be my first trip to a farmers' market since my doctor put me on a low potassium diet, so I am looking forward to see what I can find that I can eat. I am looking forward to seeing what else they have and then figuring out how to cook it. I have only two recipe books in  the house (apartment) and I think both of those are microwave cookbooks, which is not going to help since I will be using the electric range.

Cantaloupe in Las Vegas

Sweet cold cantaloupe
Brings back childhood memories
Of Grandpa’s garden

When I picked up the vegetables and fruit from the Farmers Market last Wednesday, one of the bags had a cantaloupe. I put it in the refrigerator so it could get cold. I cut it up and peeled it today and then, before putting it back into the refrigerator I tasted it. It was delicious and brought back memories from my childhood.

My Grandfather planted a garden every year. One of the things he planted was cantaloupe. I remember waiting impatiently for the cantaloupe to grow and ripen so that we could eat it. This afternoon, when Mom comes from the daycare center she will have a couple of slices. I know she will enjoy it, even if she does not remember Grandpa’s garden; she will enjoy eating the cantaloupe.

Shopping in Las Vegas

Fidál (Grace), 14 Kamál (Perfection), 169 BE – Tuesday, August 14, 2012 about 1:30 PM Pacific Time

I need to go shopping. I need to buy some new clothes and new shoes. Now all I have to do is figure out which store. I think maybe a little online research to decide where to shop in Las Vegas.

I know what I need to buy; the problem is getting out in this hot desert city to buy it. Of course, the temperatures are lower so shopping is not as difficult as last week. Last week the temperatures exceeded 110 degrees, but this week they are a bit lower. Therefore, going shopping of a morning is much more pleasant.

This morning I went too the car wash and had the car washed. It was a pleasant trip, not too hot and without any humidity. This afternoon, I noticed the clouds are rolling in so there will be a little humidity, but I don’t think it is very high. Of course, I haven’t been outside since I came home about 10:30 AM.

Tomorrow, August 15, 2012, I’m going to the farmers market, so there will be no other shopping. Even in the cooler temperatures, I can manage only one or two things outside the house at any one time. Since I’m going to the Farmer’s Market that is the only shopping I will do until Thursday or Friday. If I do any other shopping then I have to leave the fruits and vegetable in the car while I’m shopping and I don’t like to do that.

We went to a Farmers’ Market this afternoon

Mom and I went to a Farmers' Market this afternoon. Today was cooler so I decided that after I took my prescription to Food 4 Less, we would drive to the Farmers' Market in Henderson. The one we went to is on Boulder Highway where the Old Roadhouse stands.

After not getting out in the afternoon because of the heat, it was a nice outing. Anyway we bought potatoes, asparagus, oranges, and avocados. Tomorrow we'll cook the potatoes, I like fried potatoes and it's been a long time since we fried potatoes. The avocados aren't completely ripe yet, so we won't eat them for a few days. That will give Mom or me a chance to figure out what we want to go with them.

I'm thinking of an avocado sandwich myself, but I may change my mind when they are ripe. There are so many ways to fix an avocado that it's sometimes difficult for me to decide how I want to eat one.
