Foodie Friday: This Week's Chick Soup

Istiqlál (Independence), 3 Jalál (Glory), 171 BE - Friday, April 11, 2014 about 10:38 am Pacific Daylight Time

This week's chicken soup contains
  1. Four chicken legs boiled with meat removed from bones
  2. Two green onions
  3. Two 2 inch long spears of asparagus
  4. One large green bell pepper sliced into bite sized chunks
  5. One small package of carrots sliced but not peeled
  6. Five or six small orange or red bell peppers sliced.
  7. Several dashes of hot sauce
  8. Water enough to cover the chicken when it is cooking, with more water added as needed while the vegetables are cooking
 This makes enough soup for one person for several days. I also fixed a green salad with Roman lettuce, daikon radish, and some other type of green vegetable (I don't remember what the person at the Farmers' Market called it). I still have to fix a vinegar and oil dressing for the salad, so I'll have to look that recipe up on the internet because I have not made this type of dressing before. In fact, this will be the first time, in my 67 years, that I made dressing of any type and I'm looking forward to the experience.

Groceries to put away plus other stuff equals a lot of work on Friday afternoon

Istiqlál (Independence), 9 Masá’il (Questions), 170 BE - Friday, December 20, 2013 about 1:05 pm Pacific Standard Time

I left the house this morning about 8:00 am and drove across town to pick up my December senior food allotment. After picking up the two bags of food, I stopped at the grocery store because I need carrots and an onion to finish the chicken soup I'm making for this weekend. I also purchased some bananas, clam chowder (I don't make this type of soup for myself), a pumpkin pie, and whipped topping. I think I also purchased a can of mushroom soup because I won't make that for myself either.

After leaving the grocery store, I stopped at the gas station (because I knew if I went home before stopping there I wouldn't want to leave the house again). I got home about 9:30 or 10:00 am and put some of the stuff away. I still have more items to put away, but I had to rest after my outing this morning. This is why I prefer to grocery shop when I don't have anything else to do. Walking around in the grocery store tires me out, but it's good exercise.

I still have to cook the carrots, onion, and more potatoes for my chicken soup. I had to was the glass turntable in the microwave because something boiled over yesterday and I couldn't cook anything else in there until I cleaned the turntable. Now that the turntable is clean I'm going to put in the rest of the stuff for the soup. I hope I can have chicken soup sometime tonight; the next time I decide to do this I'm making sure I have all the ingredients before I start making the soup.

Monday: You Know it's Going to be a Good Day When

Kamál (Perfection), 1 Qudrat (Power), 170 BE - Monday, November 4, 2013 about 8:45 AM Pacific Standard Time

You know it's going to be a good day when...

1.  ...you see a neighbor riding his Harley-Davidson to work;

2.  ...you find the microwavable plastic container that has the leak before you put it in the microwave to reheat last night homemade chicken soup;

3.  ...you have enough left over coffee in the carafe to reheat four cups in the microwave before you have to make fresh coffee;

4.  ...you find enough laundry detergent to wash three or four loads before you have to purchase another bottle of liquid detergent;

5.  ...you don't have to put your cell phone on the charger before making the first call of the day;

6.  ...you find you have a large trash bag of aluminum cans ready to take to the recycling center to sell before Thanksgiving;

7.  ...you check the weather report to find out that there is 0% chance of rain even though there is a cloud cover;

8. ...your virus scan program doesn't take four hours to check you hard drive for threats;

9.  ...you access the internet and go straight to work instead of logging into your favorite online game website;

10.  ...you complete three blog entries before 9:30 AM.

A Dreary Day in Las Vegas

Jalál (Glory), 17 Qudrat (Power), 167 BE – Saturday, November 20, 2010 about 3:18 PM Pacific Time

This morning the sun came out from under a cloud for about five minutes. Dirty gray clouds completely hide the desert sky. I think I heard thunder earlier today, but I could have heard a jet flying above the clouds.

This morning Mom and I went out for bread. I know a place that sometimes has day old bread to give away. I got two loaves of bread and two bags of bagels. I got a loaf of white bread, a loaf of wheat bread, plane bagels and onion bagels. Yesterday, I fixed vegetable soup and I thought the onion bagels would go good with the soup.

Today I cooked chicken breast in the slow cooker. After the chicken cooked, I took it out of the cooker and put in rice. While the rice cooked, I took the chicken off the bones. I completed the dish by adding the chicken and some of the vegetable soup to the rice. We will have soup for the next several day.

I knew this was soup weather this morning. When I came home from picking up the bread, I noticed that leaves on one of the neighbor’s oak tree had changed from green to gold. When the leaves change color then it’s time for homemade soup.

Midweek reflections Wednesday, February 17

‘Idál (Justice), 11 Mulk (Dominion), 166 BE – Wednesday, February 17, 2010 about 11:32 AM Pacific Time

The week is half over; everything is supposed to be down hill from here. It's been an interesting week. Yesterday, February 16, I had to do a second virus scan of my computer because when I accessed a website I got a message about a virus. It takes my virus scan four hours to check my machine. During that time I took a nap and started two or three poems.

On Monday, I fixed chicken and vegetable soup. I used frozen corn, green beans, and sweet potatoes. The chicken I used was a roasting hen, which I took out of the freezer last week. I let the hen thaw in the refrigerator and on Sunday began cutting it up.

Sunday I fixed the legs with macaroni and then fixed the chicken and vegetable soup on Monday. I used garlic and onions in addition to a couple of other spices. I'm in the process of using the spices I have before buying any fresh spices.

I also started cleaning out the garage so that I can put my car inside at night. Spring is coming and we're going to have more birds then in the winter. The birds next in the trees I have in the front yard, so I don't want to leave the car outside at night.
